Yes they are fab. at Christmas, but they are just as good, (and not so crowded) at any other time of year. The staff is very helpful and will take time to "find" items for you. The blockhouse is now a small but fine local museum. We were hosted there by student interns who were very knowledgeable. It gave me a good summation of the Rideau Canal history. Just a shame it was raining. Recommended.

Foley Mountain Conservation Area

High atop a granite ridge overlooking the historic Upper Rideau waterway and Village of Westport is Foley Mountain Conservation Area, a UNESCO-protected area. Key highlights include Spy Rock scenic lookout, seven marked hiking/snowshoeing trails (nine kilometers in total), education and summer programs, an interpretive centre, group camping, and a natural swimming area. The view from Spy Rock at 65 meters above Westport is absolutely amazing and wheelchair accessible! The beach at Foley Mountain is sheltered and sandy and features both washroom and change facilities. Foley Mountain Conservation Area is operated by the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority. It spans 3.25 square kilometers (800 acre) and is open daily from dusk to dawn. Wildlife of note includes white tail deer, black and red squirrels, snowshoe hares, cottontail rabbits, porcupines, and chipmunks. There are 38 species of trees in the area. Take time to check out the mature birch, maple, oak, and pine Forests. And remember to check out the conservation area's beaver pond. Dogs must be on a leash at all times and are not permitted on the beach or in the water. Hunting is not permitted. And camping and fires are by permit only. Note that Rideau Trail, a 300 kilometer hiking trail linking Ottawa and Kingston, runs through the conservation area. There is currently a fee of $6 per vehicle to use Foley Mountain Conservation Area.

Canal Gallery & Frame Shop

Reviewed By court2569 - Ottawa, Canada

On Sunday we were surprised to see a window display in the gallery entitled: "Selma 1965" in the town of Merrickville! The gallery is displaying historic moments of the march from Montgomery to Selma. The collection is a special exhibition of original photography by Canadian Press, Lynn Ball who covered the March in 1965. There were restrictions on the photos going public! Memorable for us as we visited Selma in March! Highly Recommended! Worth the drive! Exhibit is Free!

Located in the beautiful quaint village of Merrickville, Ontario. MonSky Creations is an art gallery that exclusivly features the artwork of Monica Viola. Monica is fast becoming an international artist that works in several different mediums. Presently, her work can now be found all over the world. In the gallery you will find Pottery, ceramic art, fused glass and natural handcrafted soaps. All her work is "unique" and "one-of-a-kind". Was staying in Merrickville over the summer. Found this beautiful store in a little mall. Products are one of a kind. Gary is very knowledgeable. Apparently his wife creates all the ornaments and showpieces. He also makes some of the smaller pieces. Excellent job too....MoreThank you so very much for your kind review. a while back i discovered fiona macintyre designs. fiona is a silver smith who also creates jewelry. back then she worked at studios in and around Toronto.
Fiona has recently opened a shop in Merrickville. she has some unique designs on display for sale. definitely worth stopping by.
i have bought a new number of her pieces over the years. so when it came time for my wedding i asked fiona to design something.
i didn't really have any ideas of what i wanted so fiona drew several designs for me. i really liked all the designs and it was hard to choose just one. after asking me several questions we picked a design for me that is funky and different but very easy to wear day to day. the process was very fun and easy.
now i have an amazing wedding ring that i get compliments on all the time. she added some cool figures including my husband's birthstones on the ring. i have included pictures here.
i would highly recommend fiona and her work.

Love this little gem in Merrickville. This is a great shop/gallery in historic Merrickville. They carry a wonderful selection of local artist's work including handcrafted peppermills, jewelery, hats, paintings, etc. I bought a wonderful painting by a local artist and had to stop myself from doing more damage to my pocketbook. However, I am sure to keep checking back every time I am in town to see what new temptations are available. Highly recommend checking this place out!

Rideau King Tours

Reviewed By Colleen685 - Ottawa, Canada

My companion and I took this boat tour from Merrickville to Westport. We travelled west towards Smith Falls passing through 7 canal locks, through Lower Rideau Lake, Big Rideau Lake, the Narrows lock and on to Upper Rideau Lake. Along the way we saw a Osprey nest and we were fortunate to see the mom and one of her chicks, we saw a hawk fishing, gulls, loons, ducks, orioles, beautiful homes and cottages, lovely Forests and boats of all sizes during our travels. The canal system is lovely to travel, what a relaxing way to spend a lovely summer day. It is truly amazing when you stop and think about it being built during the years 1826-1831 with none of the heavy machinery that we have now. The canal was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007. The captain of our boat gave us information throughout the trip about the canal and the locks, he also showed that he had a sense of humour with a few snappy one liners. There were 2 crew members who were very pleasant. There was a light lunch served of salad and a hot dog plus water or a soft drink. You could buy beer/wine, coffee, chips and chocolate bars. My companion and I were wishing that we had brought some fruit or cheese for a healthy snack. The boat can hold 50 passengers, we were lucky and there were only 20 passengers, so we had lots of room. We sat up on the deck and it was lovely with the sun shining. The trip back from Westport was by school bus (in the add it say private coach), it takes about an hour from Westport. We very much enjoyed this trip.
Hints:
Remember to bring a sweater or windbreaker as it gets very windy out on the open water. If you make a reservation and have to cancel it will cost you 25% (I did not see this advertised and it was not mentioned to me when I phoned to make a reservation).
