Awesome experience!! From the staff at surf shop, surf gear in store, beach trailer setup with gear to the informative, extremely passionate and helpful staff, it was a very well crafted operation. The lesson with Cameron was fun, relaxed and super enjoyable. Would highly recommend and hope to get back for intermediate at a later stage.

Amazing walk with the most stunning view you could ever ask for. The hike was a good challenge as you had to walk to the end of the beach first though before you actually started the hike. Otherwise great way to embrace the nature of Mangawhai

Great little museum, gift shop, replica village under construction and a cafe with great China and excellent sandwiches- as my mum (and she’s approaching 90) said “proper ones”. Cafe nice and bright very clean and tidy and run by two older ladies who know how to make good tea with a smile. Highly recommended.

Mangawhai Beach

Reviewed By nnmercman - Camberley, United Kingdom

Travelling back to Auckland, saw direction signs on the main road and as it's only approx 16km detour decided to visit the area. The beach is further on from the town and boat ramp, has plenty of parking plus clean unisex toilets. The beach is popular with surfers but wasn't very wavy when we visited. However, you can walk down to the inlet cove from the other side of the car park and it's very tranquil. You can sign up for Surfing lessons, hike along the beach and various trails, go for a swim or enjoy a picnic at one of the benches/tables. The views out across the bay and back across the inlet are worth the trip. Whilst there, a pop up type coffee stand was on the grass next to the restrooms and although it only sells coffee and not tea, there's also a yoghurt ice cream stand where you can add fresh (frozen) berries - I had a selection of all three on offer - yummy .......!! You can rejoin the main Auckland road further down so there's no need to backtrack.

Being a fishing family I have fished for nearly 40 years. I have been on many charters both North and South Islands plus we own our own boat.
January 2014 we decided to give RnR Charters a go so we did a half day [5 hours] charter. This was enough time to get out to the Hen n Chicks allowing 3 ½ to 4 hours actually fishing. In total we had 7 fisher persons on board from 2 different groups.
The Positives - RnR boat is lovely and comfortable to fish from, having the family with me the amenities were great. Steph was very helpful and made teas and coffees when needed. The day was perfect all conditions were perfect.
The Negatives – We had 7 people fishing on the boat, too many to do quality fishing, far too congested. Would recommend 4-5 people max. Wayne did his job but didn’t real do anything special. Fishing was poor, total boat catch for 7 people was 6 snapper and a few other misc fish. Some people didn’t catch a snapper all day. RnR could have done better looking for fish but sat in one spot too long.
Value for money = 5/10, service 6/10, fishing quality 3/10 boat and amenities 8/10. Would try another charter before we went back to RnR.
RnR say 'We can show you what others only dream about!' I dont think so or if they do we did not feel that.

We stopped off for a wine tasting session and a cold platter of mixed meat and cheese nibbles. The setting is beautiful and with cool breezes at top of the hill. The Pinot Noir was absolutely delicious. The host was friendly and hospitable. Highly recommended way to while away 2 hours.

Fishmeister

Reviewed By geoffg630 - Stuart, Florida

Had a great trip out with Capt. Mike on Fishmeister back in August out of Mangawhai Heads. The fishing was great but what really struck me was Mike's attention to safety. Skippering a boat is not something you can learn in a couple of years. Mike has clearly been on the water his entire life and it really shows with his instinctive boat handling and attention to the details.
But to the fishing..... the first place we tried was a bust. Supposed to be a new local's secret spot the Captain had heard about. Not so much. 20 mins or so there and it was time to move on to proven grounds. Worth a crack though...
From there a quick blast out to the Hen and Chicks. Pretty soon we were into it. Mike showed me how to bait the rig and then I had it from there. The snapper were coming on board nice and quickly and though we could easily have reached the catch limit we stopped several short as we had plenty and wanted to leave some for another day.
The boat is really roomy and comfortable. Plenty of room for at least 6 anglers at one time, I reckon. The big Honda outboard has tons of power and is nice and quiet.
Definitely recommend Capt Mike and Fishmeister!
Really a great setup.
Thanks Mike!

Wined About Bike Tours

Take a cycle around Mangawhai Village and Heads to enjoy the local wineries, orchards, olive groves, chocolate factory, art and craft venues and other boutique outlets in Magical Mangawhai. The area also has some of the most spectacular vistas and scenery including a surf beach and quiet estuary with the sand dunes as a back drop.

We really enjoyed our wined about bike tour...Nikki and John couldn't have been more helpful and welcoming. I've done many wine tours around the world but I've never been to cellar doors quite like these four! The owners met us at each cellar door and were relaxed, non pushy and made us all feel at ease. We tasted some delicious wines and had a great day:)
A cycle path along the main road and a few more sign posts could make this wine tour even more enjoyable!
Many thanks!
