At the every end of the road with a view of the inlet we had good chicken wings, calamari, good local lager and cider. Very good service, smart friendly waitress. All the locals could care less about the view and were in the pub overlooking the parking lot. Obviously a very popular hangout. Any where else probably would have built a fancy/schmancy hoity-toity joint none of the locals would go near.

Great little hidden spot full of locals and well informed travelers, no website, doesn't look like much but is tasty and well priced for the quality of the food

Surprising find in a small seaside/rural town, our meal was excellent as were the attentive Waitstaff. Seafood cassoulet and onion soup starter delightful while our lamb shank mains were perfectly cooked. Can't be easy finding seasonal ingredients I'm sure but these guys do a great job regardless

The Sandbar has had a big makeover and an almost total change of staff. The place looks brighter with more counter space. We had breakfast here for a change ~ avocado smash and poached eggs both of which went down well. Still the best coffee in Mangawhai.

In Auckland all the pizza seems to come from three big brands. When you get away you realise the best pizza comes from independent chefs. Amber's Q cafe pizza is a great example. They are not to be missed. Special cooking from one chef, and in an environment enhanced by Trevor at the front of house. Q Cafe at Mangawhai is for sale. If Amber doesn't go with the deal though it might be better to follow her to her next kitchen!

Highly recommend. Nice location with a chilled backyard. We had great breakfast with eggs, quinoa bowl, smoked salmon, spinach and very good coffee. We needed to wait for the first order and received two free coffee2go as compensation. Very friendly and a surprise as we actually did not wait too long for the initial ordered coffee.

We stopped for a lunch and were looked after by an accommodating and friendly staff. A shout out to server, Jeremy, from Montreal who recognized the retro Saskatchewan Roughrider logo on the cap I was wearing and we had a most delightful visit with him. He is a keeper - along with the others who were on duty this afternoon.
The venue lends itself to lay back and relax.

It doesn't look like much from the outside, but don't miss the eclectic collection of old mannequins, books, China, Chinese figures and bric-a-brac crowding this cafe. Unique atmosphere, huge coffees and hot chocolates, great focaccias and cakes. Definitely worth a stop.
Campervans can park off the very small service road, down the lane on the left of the cafe. There is a large graveled car park behind with turning room. Watch the gutter - a big bump!

The Cow Shed restaurant and farm shop is situated on a 7 acre rural property, in a converted milking shed. Your hosts Wendy and Robert have owned and been developing the property for 15 years and have an extensive orchard and Gardens. The cow shed restaurant has a beautiful view of native bush and farmland. Eating at The Cow Shed restaurant is a unique experience with delicious wholesome food that has a home cooked feel about it. The set menu consists of a generous three course dinner with sides and a choice of mains. Where possible, all ingredients used at the cow shed are sourced from Wendy and Robert's garden or locally.
We have dined at "The Cowshed" on numerous occasions and love it . The country setting and atmosphere are second to none . The hosts are friendly and hospitable . The food is always excellent and servings are very generous . Would recommend to all :-)

Wood Street Freehouse is the home of craft beer in Magical Mangawhai Heads. Serving locally sourced beers, wines and produce. Chalkboard tables, complimentary popcorn, Spacies, Doggy Deck, 10 taps of New Zealand Craft Beers and a great sharing style menu makes Wood Street Freehouse the local for all the family What is a Freehouse, we hear you cry? Unlike a tied-house, a free house is a pub that is owned independently of the brewery (or breweries) that supply it. As a result, a free house can stock whichever beers it chooses from whichever Breweries it chooses. Free houses are rare, the majority of pubs in New Zealand are tied-houses.
Went there for a quick breakfast before golf at local course. Few options but produced a really good breakfast in a matter of minutes. Proves yet again that quality always wins the day. Coffee was exceptional too
