Considering the size of the town, this is a relatively large Beguinage, but still only has 16 streets and alleys. One of the streets on one side has all the same houses, but in the rest you find a large range of different style and size houses. This is rather different from the other beguinages I have visited. Furthermore, there is no grass square, but there are quite a few trees in the private Gardens. It has a large barok church, which sadly seems to be never open. Part is undergoing necessary renovations.

The Zimmer tower looks very attractive from the outside. The museum about time measurement is alright. Inside the tower one finds one floor where tides and times are kept of places around the world. The second floor shows the mechanism behind the clocks on the outside of the tower. There is also a movie explaining the history of the tower, which was first called the Cornelius tower: With the upcoming 100-year anniversary of Belgium in 1930, Zimmer started the conversion of this medieval (first mentioned in 1425) fortification to its present state.

Lier is an attractive town with an impressive main square town hall, and with added bonus of a small river rubbing thought the centre. However this was an unexpected highlight an impressively large church with a beautiful interior. The medieval rode screen and the 15th century stained glass in the chancel are particularly fine. Even by the high standards of Flanders and Antwerp this is one church that is well worth visiting.

This is a lovely small town, once important enough to host the marriage ceremony between Joanna of Castile and Philip the handsome and a bit later host the banned Christian II of Denmark for several years. The Grote Markt is a lovely square with the belfry as well as the classicist town hall, and lots of restaurants housed in nice buildings. Across the river is the main church, named after a local saint who died in 719. Not to be missed is the Beguinage, a little town inside the town. After a walk through the center, seeing the Zimmer tower and gevangenpoort, one can walk on top of where once was the city wall, now lined with trees, to the grote spui. The latter regulated water levels on the river through town, from 1516 onwards. The Weyts museum (stedelijk museum) has a small but nice collection.

every year we take the boat tour and every year my kids are as enthusiastic as it would be their first time on a boat. Also for adults the explanation is really worth listening.

A small but delightful and relatively inexpensive €4 gallery showing several huge Breughel paintings on loan from Antwerp. No audio tour in English, but there was an explanation (several pages) about the "Proverbs" -- just love how Breughel depicts real life scenes and "sinners"......we spent a lot of time locating the various proverbs and laughing at the interpretation. Well worth a visit.

Amazing, so peaceful and calming. You can have a private sauna for two all to yourselves up to three hours and just relax. They have a nice warm pool, amazing jacuzzi, sauna and hamman room, which is so cosy I almost fell asleep. Plus two very big showers for you to rinse off, a leather sofa to chill on and a stocked fridge filled with all sorts of drinks, from alcoholic to non alcoholic, for you to choose from, for a very affordable price. usually places like this set their drink prices so high that you end up paying €6 for water or something like that. But here it was only €3 and soft drinks for €2.50. Overall we had a great relaxing time with total chill followed up by some very good professional and polite service. I highly recommend to everyone.

This, and the Zimmer tower, and the only remnants of the wall that once encircled and defended the town. The gevangenpoort was one of the gates, and is at the opposite side of the Zimmer tower. One cannot enter, but it is a nice building, and worth crossing the square for, and one of the buildings that makes Lier such a lovely small town.
