One of the most revered monasteries in Russia. The nature of such provisions is not entirely clear. Whether the fact that here was a sanctuary for hermits, hermits, whether due to the fact that here three days spent Dostoevsky after the death of his son. But the monastery is very rich. It was almost rebuilt after the devastation in Soviet times – before it happened to be a hospital, a rest house and even a concentration camp - and impresses with a number of buildings and size of the monastic economy.
Even on a weekday there are the crowds of pilgrims, and you really can't see something, or dip into yourself. You will not succeed.

When in Kaluga there are two things you must see, one is the State Museum of Cosmonauts and the other is the Tsiolkovsky House Museum. Konstantin Tsiolkovsky was the theoretical physicist in the 1920/30's, and his work laid the foundation to all todays space exploration. The house has been preserved as it was when he lived there and its interesting to where such a great man came from. There is a guide to take you around the house if you wish, but only in Russian, however they have English guide notes available for all rooms if needed. A thoroughly good museum and recommended to visit.

This is the really cool, even perfect example of the private park or even zoo with different (fantastic amount of types) birds, animals, fishes and many other. Nobody will be dissapointed.
Not so big but very well equipped, designed territory with friendly staff and reasonable prices for entrance and other service. Friendly approach to children, horseriding zone, cafe and etc. Even cottages for those who wanna stay for some days.
As this place is located about 100 km away from Moscow - this is really village and forrest around with small river. Ecologically ideal!
I can really recommend you to visit that place which is not common for Russia to exist in such way.
Me, my parents and children like to visit this park several times a year. Expecially on New Year, when in winter in the park they create cool icerun for all from children to old people :)))

Well kept park in the centre of Kaluga with a nice view over river Oka and the new district. You can even find a tree which is more than 500 years old, another tree that was covered with handicraft and the houses at the square are beautiful, nicely restored and worth seeing and spending some time!

This monastery is considered to be the main attraction of Borovsk, although it is not located within the town but in the Roshcha village. Known abode, here was buried the Boyarynya (noblewoman) Morozova, the main character in the famous painting of Surikov. However, due to the fact that the monastery is still men's, her tombstone was moved to another temple. The monastery complex is beautiful – largely because it's restored. The area around the buildings is properly maintained . Very valuable frescoes of Dionysius, somewhat reminiscent of his creations from the Ferapontov monastery. However, there is a "but". Local monks are arrogant and boast of wealth of the monastery. It is prohibited to photograph, you need to seek the permission of the priest, the monastery area in some places looks like a market that sells chinese goods and medicinal herbs and syrups of questionable value from Altai.

You can relate to the creative manner by a local artistand to assess the fruits of his imagination, depicted on the walls of houses in Borovsk, in different ways. For example, I can not enroll yourself in the fans of his graffiti. As far as I know, there are some residents with similar mixed attitude. As representatives of the city administration, which is trying to place the activity of the artist in any legal framework. However, it is impossible not to admit that this street art unexpected in a provincial town makes the appearance of Borovsk original and not comparable. It is a pity that between the artist and the city authorities there is misunderstanding and conflict. And what he used for his graffiti are cheap and short-living paints, that's why they are deteriorating and losing the clarity and purity.

It's a real classy site, a jewel in the crown of the Russian monasteries’ belt. Absolutely adorable Kazan Cathedral, to which does not hinder the similarity with the building of the State Historical Museum in Moscow, and that is not surprising – their architetors were father and son Sherwood respectively. An inimitable is an example of the original openwork masonry, with which the Sherwood-son has achieved an incomparable effect. It is also astonishing that the brick factory for the construction of the monastery (it is women's) has been founded here thanks to its first abbess, the native of Kozelsk, which is close enough to Shamordino. Like Optina pustyn friary monastery too.
Here you should come for another attraction - to admire the fascinating Russian landscape, which spread to a few tens of kilometers away from the monastery and emanate the smells of grass, wild flowers and wild berries that really intoxicate without wine.
