Nekresi Monastery Complex

Reviewed By Ariel857 - Israel

This visit proved to be laborious and hard-earned. The monastery is located uphill and the walk up there is no mean feat for many people. There is a very handy and affordable bus ride to the monastery but we had it the hard way. There are breathtaking views to behold on the way up as a reward for perseverance and excellent shots can be taken by photo enthusiasts among us.
Upon reaching the monastery, we were utterly overwhelmed by the beauty of the place and it's surroundings. It was originally built in the 4th century and its serenity and quiet beauty just left us speechless. We had a brief exchange with a monk praying in the main church and left humbled by wisdom of this holy man.
A wealth of experience.

David Gareja Monastery

Reviewed By Arianna M

Davit Gareja is probably my favourite monastery between the monasteries I visited in caucasus, because of its very unique structure. The monastery complex is composed by two main parts: the buildings and the caves. Also, it is developed on two sides of a hill, very close to the border with Azerbaijan, so you need to hike a bit to get a complete view of the parts that compose it. Be sure to wear comfortable trekking shoes.
Several tour operators offers transport here, maybe also guided tour, but it was not my case and I choose one with transport only. The agency provided us with a map with some explanation and a path to follow to hike the hill in order to visit all the various buildings that compose the complex.
One side of the mountain, the one where the transportation stopped, is composed by several "rooms" (caves) that the monks carved themselves. In time the complex grew and now it is composed of several caves (on both sides of the hill), church, chapels, living areas, most of them open for visiting. In some caves there are still frescoes well preserved. All the caves are open for visi, if nature allows you to entry of course, because from what I could see there is no maintenance, like cutting trees or grass, but the vegetation poor and the area seems to be dry so I was able to see many of them.
During the hiking I met two friendly Georgian soldiers, since the area is close to the border with Azerbaijan there is a minimum control of travellers.
Apart from the monastery, there is a small shop that sells some souvenirs and water, in the same building on the ground floor there are the toilets. When we visited it was not possible to buy food there so be sure to take something with you if you need.

Alaverdi St. George Cathedral

Reviewed By Soda100 - New Orleans, LA

A spectacular site, with remarkable architecture. The peaked Georgian -style tower is in beautiful form to behold. It's worth the trip out to this Cathedral, which really is unique. It is pastoral landscape and farms around the Cathedral, so it is very striking to see this masterpiece in such unassuming surroundings. There is also a good wine sampling house across the street, specializing in regional wines made by the monks associated with the Cathedral.

Signagi City Walls

Reviewed By bobca1947 - home

King Erekle II constructed a defensive wall around the hill town of Signagi in the 18th century. Its towers were named for the surrounding villages, and the townspeople were meant to gather at their tower in times of trouble. It was a fun experience to walk the narrow streets and admire the richly carved balconies and the green Valleys below.

The place is getting more and more popular every year and for a very good reason. If the road was more accessible, I believe it would have been more popular than Kazbegi. Make sure you visit the park headquarters in lower Omalo - they have a lot of info, great presentation and good maps.

I've been here in January 2017 with family. Very soft climate - a lot of green trees. Location in the heart of well known vine region - Kakhety. Each village around has their own vineyards and gave a regional names to vines (Mukuzani, Tsynandali and so on). The muzeum located in the butiful green park. Very interesting museum dedicated to one of the famous Gergian poet - prince Alexander Chavchavadze and his family.
There is a local vinery in the museum - you MUST try some rare boteled vines.
