Absolutely must see. I visited in 2006 (the required date would not let me go further back than 2015), so I am sure that it is very different now, but this aquarium was by far the highlight of my trip and I will be back.

The museum had exhibits on prehistoric animals that used to live in Iwaki, geology, life in a coal mining town, and about Spa Resort Hawaiians, Iwaki's main claim to fame nowadays.
Most of the information was in Japanese, although there was an English handout available. Thankfully, you didn't need an awful lot of Reading to appreciate the exhibits, which were real-life rather than computer-based. A giant skeleton of a dinosaur works pretty well in any language!
There's a souvenir shop available. The only Japan-related geological items available was amber from the region.
Not a world-class tourist attraction, but suitable for families, and people who like museums. Even better for those who can read Japanese.

Went there a few times when it was brand-spanking new. It gave us something to do when my daughter was really young. Otherwise, meh.
(Why doesn't TA allow us to post the time we actually visited rather than having to choose from a list? I went way, way before 2012).

Has it been 855 years already? Amidadō at Ganjō-ji was constructed in 1160. It is a national treasure of Japan, which is to say one of the most precious of Japan’s tangible cultural assets. For a wooden structure, the hall is incredibly ancient. Inside there are also wooden statues. Some colour remains on the columns and walls, once depicting garish scenes, now faded into wispy ghosts. The horseshoe-shaped lake surrounding the hall is serene and peaceful, abounding in nature. One crosses a first bridge onto an island in the garden lake, before hopping across a smaller bridge to get to Amidadō. The wooden Bridges have faded from red to pink. I suspect they were last painted sometime after 1982 when the park was cleaned up following archaeological investigations. Adjacent to the site is Ganjō-ji itself. This album also includes pictures of that – it is surrounded by a sloping cemetery, Tokiwa-jinja and random stuff that interested me in Uchigo, the nearest town.

This lighthouse is also a museum. After a climb one reaches the lighthouse which is situated on a cape. As it is a museum one has to pay an entrance fee. The view from the top is worthwhile the climb.
