Hartbeespoort, informally also known as "Harties", is a small resort town in the North West Province of South Africa, situated on slopes of the Magaliesberg mountain and the banks of the Hartbeespoort Dam. The name of the town means "gateway of the hartbees" (a species of antelope) in Afrikaans. It was previously known as Schoemansville, named after General Hendrik Schoeman, a Boer General in the Anglo-Boer War, who owned the farm that the Hartbeespoort Dam was built on.

Exclusive cruise on a luxurious pontoon boat! Experience Hartbeespoort the best way possible! You’ll feel like being on a Mediterranean dream vacation. It is the ideal attraction to escape the hectic city buzz and enjoy a day out. The modern pontoon with its lovely interior is ideal to host parties, functions, teambuilding and special occasions or simply to enjoy something different.
We did a Sunday lunch cruise with the family in December. I was very surprised and impressed with the quality of the buffet as well as the quality of service. Definitely worth it and will do it again!

This attraction north of Johannesburg attempts to show busloads of tourists how the Lesedi tribe lives and works.
This is the best place to have brief info about African culture.
They show and demonstrate local life styles.
We loved to be there and had great time.
Especially for tourists who are in Johannesburg for a short period of time, this place is must to see.
Highly recommended

We took the private tour which allowed for some access to otherwise restricted areas. Also our guide had beer for us and meat to feed the animals which were literally climbing on our vehicle. Definitely worth it even if it was quite more expensive than a standard tour.

The Monkey Sanctuary is one of several sanctuaries in a group of sanctuaries, including the elephant sanctuary that provides for orphaned and abused animals. Situated west of Hartbeesport Dam alongside the Elephant sanctuary it provides an environment where monkeys (primates) can be given their freedom in a natural environment. The sanctuary situated in one of the many Kloofs (Gorges) of the Magaliesberg mountain range provides the perfect environment for Monkeys from around the world.
I love wildlife and go on many Safaris but I am normally loathe to visit any sort of animal attraction. If I do visit one it has to be because they are rescuing vulnerable animals from living a life they shouldn’t (I.e. like these monkeys...MoreGood day. The Cheetah Centre in South Africa was established in 1971, initially as a cheetah breeding project and the Centre has during the past 40 years bred over 800 cheetah cubs. Various conservation projects have been initiated since its inception which also inlcudes a successful African wild dog breeding programme. Known in the past as the De Wildt Cheetah Centre the name has recently been changed to the Ann van Dyk Cheetah Centre as a tribute to the woman who has devoted her life to the survival of the cheetahs as well as other rare and endangered species
They are conserving both cheetah and wild dogs. The latter is particularly threatened so this work is very important Two safari type trips a day which are both entertaining and very informative. The staff are clearly very dedicated to their work. Opportunity to “adopt” animals...MoreMany thanks for your kind words - we all live by Ann's motto: "Conservation through Education". It is only through people like yourselves that we can continue to grow the Ann van Dyk Cheetah Centre.

Booking and getting there was easy. About 45 minutes out of Johannesburg. We were greeted by a friendly man who I presume is the owner. The skipper was less friendly but that had no impact on our enjoyment. We waited for a few latecomers to arrive so didn't depart on time but given the relaxed nature of the cruise it didn't pose any problems for us. The wind was quite chilly on the morning we went but there is nowhere to escape it once you get going so make sure you dress appropriately. There are toilets on board but they looked fairy rudimentary so should probably only be used in an emergency. The boat appears to be well looked after. There were lots of comfortable places to sit. My two kids (under four) thoroughly enjoyed the cruise but I had to remain vigilant because there are a few places they would be able to slip overboard if they weren't being monitored. Overall - a really good excursion and I would definitely recommend.

You have to pick where you park very carefully and be lucky. Both sides of the robots packed with the usual touts but in mega strength. Pick the parking spot next to the tunnel entrance room for three cars - hence the lucky comment. Need telephoto lenses to get anything decent, but it is certainly unusual
