Quite a nice 15th century Grade II listed building about one mile from Halifax centre. Set in a fairly large park with a boating lake, children's play area and a small train. The house is well furnished with a wide range of pieces from different periods At £5 (concessions £4) entrance it is a bit expensive, but makes for a good outing on a warm day. Combine with a visit to Piece Hall and/or Eureka! for a full day out.

Shibden Park

Reviewed By Em5ley - Huddersfield, United Kingdom

Visited today for the first time with our baby and we really enjoyed it. It was very cold but we were wrapped up and definitely needed it! Lovely open park space with outdoor children’s play area, good sized boating lake, pitch and putt and a miniature railway (in season).
Lots of ducks and swans on the pond, and bags of bird food can be purchased in the cafe.
We stopped off for a cuppa by the lake and ended up having lunch. It was really good value for money and nice food. Clean and spacious Seating area with good toilet facilities with baby change.
Didn’t visit the main Hall at the top of the park but we will be going back in the better weather with a picnic and doing this next time.
The paths around the park are suitable for pushchairs/wheelchairs and are mostly mud free but the path down to the park from the car park is quite steep. However it is till accessible you just need to be careful.

I love the walks around Ogden what ever the weather. There are different walks around the grounds for all abilities. The park is well looked after and the staff in the café are very nice indeed.
There are different things to do at the park from bird boxes to laying hedges. You would need to look on the web site for details and there is a charge for these activities.
The park is dog friendly and encourages you to clean up after your dogs with plenty of bins situated around the Reservoir walks

Set in the attractive surroundings of Akroyd Park, at the centre of Akroydon model village conservation area, this Victorian mansion was the home of local mill owner, philanthropist and MP, Colonel Edward Akroyd. We are a short distance from the centre of Halifax, with free parking and close to public transport links. Bankfield's Exhibitions cover local history, costume, art, toys, military history, jewellery and textiles from around the world. Our collections contain objects from Ancient Egypt through to the 21st Century as we continue to collect and preserve items for future generations

Somewhere that you can make your own agenda; I think I was being expected to take an interest in hat making (St Catherines day), but spent more time looking in to the history of the Akroyds and Akroydtown. A reminder of the local heritage of heavy wool and Worsted production the exhibits and displays give some insight into social history. Free to get in! A good place to wander.

Eureka! The National Children's Museum

We're an award-winning children's museum in Halifax, West Yorkshire, with more than 400 interactive exhibits which inspire children aged 0-11 to learn about themselves and the world around them through imagination, discovery and, most importantly, play!

Reviewed By JOHNHEPPENSTALL - Holmfirth, United Kingdom

We called today with some childminded children. The car park is close by and massive, £3 for upto 4 hours which is not bad value, can be extended for another £1.
The building itself is inviting and the friendly staff soon had us in. There’s loads of places to park buggies and hang coats then it’s just a matter of choosing where to go first.
There’s some shops and a bank you can go in and pretend to go shopping or there’s a big garage you can play in a pretend to go through the car wash, all with interesting interactive buttons to press and turn to make things work and use your imagination.
There’s a lift to the upper floor and we found this area more for the older school parties of which there were loads on this particular day so made the whole place feel very busy.
Our children loved it and we bought a yearly pass so we can visit as many times as we like now

Manor Heath and Jungle Experience

Manor Heath and jungle experience is located just outside Halifax.
The Jungle experience has won a must see green flag award. It contains an array of botanical Gardens with a huge variety of plants, butterflies and animals. This provides an excellent learning facility for children and is well worth a visit. I think the admission was £1 per person.
The park also has a walled demonstration garden which is more suited for the keener gardeners not a novice like me.
The park has won Yorkshire in Bloom award which not only looks very pretty, but provides extensive opportunities for children to entertain themselves. The park has a children’s play area which suits children of all ages. On a weekend several football matches are played on one of the pitches.
The park has a cafeteria and a fish and chip shop in the middle of the park.

Calderdale Industrial Museum

A museum showing the development of industry in Halifax and Calderdale from domestic textile manufacture in the seventeenth century through to modern machine tools. The museum is located in the centre of Halifax, five minutes from the train station and Eureka! It is unusual in covering such a wide range of industries in one museum.

Reviewed By Sarah E - Halifax, United Kingdom

Couldn’t believe the wealth of exhibits in this fantastic museum. It was so nice to my kids genuinely taking an interest in our industrial past. Apparently cafe opening soon which will be a great addition. We hoped over on the train from Bradford & arrived at the museum in minutes. Also great that it’s just next to the piece hall which the kids also loved. Huge thank you to the volunteers who made our day so special!
