I have been visiting this mountain area for the last 10 years and it has transformed from an out-of-the-way, ancient Buddhist Temple and historic summer home of one of China's modern day historic leaders to a major tourist attraction.
Chiang Kai Chek's family summer home is here and built on a promontory of the mountain, overlooking a very large mountain lake in the valley below. His family home for generations is down in the town of Xikou, facing the river, and is worth visiting as well. Be prepared to walk and climb stairs when visiting any part of this mountain but I think it is well worth the effort. The summer home compound is quite extensive and there are historic notations in most rooms and areas of the compound, I thoroughly enjoyed it. The walk back down the ridge of the mountain to the amazing waterfall is worth the effort and ends up right across the road from the Laughing Buddha Temple.
When I first started going there it was a site of a 1600 year old Buddhist Temple that was frequented almost exclusively by people from the region who came up to the mountain to pray. Since then, a new temple has been built alongside the old one, accompanied by a 186 foot tall copper "laughing Buddha" with continually expanding structures that you would be hard pressed to tell that they were not also 1000 years old. The architecture and construction techniques are amazing and unless you knew better, you would not even notice that the old gate to the original temple was not built at the same time the new wall and gates were built. The only difference is that now they charge an entrance fee. I would still say that it's worth the entrance fee to go through the place and take it in, whether you are Buddhist or a Christian who is just interested in the historical significance of the place. Please be aware that while it is perfectly acceptable to take photos of the grounds of the temple, the huge, copper Laughing Buddha and all other statues and structures, it is not acceptable to take photos inside the individual temple buildings as they are a place of worship.
There are other structures in the area which are of historical significance such as the house where General Zhang was placed under house arrest after he took it upon himself to fight against the invading Japanese forces in conjunction with the communist troops (at least this is my understanding of the situation).

The Tianyi Library offers a unique glimpse at Qing-dynasty era Gardens and Libraries, and provides a relaxing respite from the energy and chaos of Ningbo. The garden is beautifully landscaped and has a lot of shade; in fact, despite the fact that the main garden paths were absolutely packed with loud and noisy tour groups, the side paths winding through the small little rock Gardens or going through the lake were surprisingly empty. The buildings have some nice artifacts from the Qing dynasty, including books from the actual Tianyi Library's collection, and are well preserved. The entire museum is clean and very large, but the major qualm we had about this garden were the crowds. The landscape is beautiful until a large tour group with a loud megaphone decides to burst through the path. All in all, the Tianyi Library is a great place to appreciate traditional Chinese architecture and gardens; however, be prepared to deal with quite a few tour groups if visiting in the middle of day. However, if you visit early, I'm sure it'll be a magical experience.

I have stayed here many times over the last 10 years. It was built for tourists, mostly Chinese nationals, who come to the area to enjoy the Mountains, lakes, streams and quiet. Over the years a major highway has been built across the little river from the resort so it is not nearly as quiet as in 2004. It still has a beautiful garden area and the rooms have always been clean but the beds are typical of China and are extremely hard by western standards. While it is pretty and clean, I would not recommend it for the average North American or European tourist.

In authentic to period of Chiang Kai-shek's birth. Idealized 1930s and 40s recreations by Chiang when he was in power and post-1995 PRC recreations to support the outreach to Taiwan. But -- and see my other review of Xuedou Mountain Resort -- some of that is spectacular and the Miaogaoshan Villa there is worth seeing, especially if your know Chinese and/or something about Chinese modern history and bring along an interpreter.

Firstly, I was attracted to visit this museum was because of its outer look, something very unique for me. And it turned out as a great museum with huge collections. They have few floors with different theme each, from the old times to the contemporary. If you love museum, it's definitely a must visit one when you are in the city. Moreover, it's very clean and convenient with well layout, and Free.

It seems like most of this quarter was totally rebuilt based on the style of old Ningbo streets but still it is an attractive place. You should remember that main role of the street is to feed you. You will not find almost any souvenir shops but dozens of smaller and bigger restaurants and fast foods.
