National park Plitvice Lakes is considered one of the most beautiful national parks in the world. Plitvice Lakes make wonderful blend of oak Forests, meadows, rocks and lakes. You can explore them by walking along the lakes, by electric train or electric boat.
Founded in 1949, Plitvice Lakes National Park is the largest national park in Croatia and one of the oldest. It is located in the mountainous karst area of central Croatia at the border to Bosnia and Herzegovina. The park extends 296 square kilometres and is world-famous for its lakes, Waterfalls, and cascades which descend 133 metres over a distance of about eight kilometres. The lakes are also renowned for their turquoise colour. Water entering the lakes starts at the confluence of the Bijela Rijeka and the Crna Rijeka. Water exiting the lowest lake forms the Korana River. It takes upwards of six hours to explore the park’s 16 lakes (12 upper and four lower) on foot (you can shave off two hours by leveraging the park's free boats and buses [departing every 30 minutes from April to October]). Kozjak is the park’s largest lake. Veliki Slap, a waterfall within the park, is the tallest in Croatia at 78 metres! Plitvice Lakes National Park is heavily forested with mostly beech, spruce, and fir trees. It is also home to bears, wolves, butterflies, lizards, eagles, trout, owls, and lynxes. Plitvice Lakes National Park is UNESCO World Heritage site. Approximately one million people visit the park each year. Entrance costs €24 for adults during the peak season. It is open from 7:00 in the morning until 8:00 at night. Be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes. Swimming is not permitted in any of the lakes.

The upper lakes, although spectacular, and not as good as the lower lakes. If you are visiting the upper lakes make sure you also visit the lower lakes. Be prepared for big crowds, especially in the summer. In the fall the early morning was best for fewer people.

While not as high as Veliki Slap above it, Sastavci is more beautiful in my opinion. Of course, all of the falls and cascades are spectacular in this park, particularly on a nice day with no crowds.

This 18th-century, 18 hectare park also houses the city zoo.
Few months I lived in this neighborhood close to the Maksimir Park. I was there for run, walk or barbecue with friends. During all season of year is this park so beautiful. You can find benches, paths, lakes and beautiful buildings. My favourite season there is autumn when is whole park full of colors and the atmosphere is wonderful. I spent there really lot of time and I wish that I spend more. After whole day of sightseeing in town is this the best choice for quiet time and for re-charging your batteries for next trips. Everybody whole loves park have to visit this place.

You can catch a tram to the base of the mountain and start climbing the trek from Zagreb's northern suburb (tram ends at Dolje and there is a car park leading to a pedestrian path under a tunnel). Takes about 2 hours to walk to the top at a moderate pace - not for people with joint or heart issues. Restaurant at the top for some well earned hot food and beer. Buses run from Zagreb to the restaurant also if you want to cheat.

Every lake on the Upper Lakes has its own exquisite beauty, and is worth exploring. The water in this lake, as in the others, is crystal clear. Being one of the larger upper lakes, it was pleasant to sit on one of the benches on its shores for a break and just take in the fresh air and beautiful scenery.

A 19th-century restoration of a 13th-century castle.
And here we all thought that George R.R. Martin was so clever! I was pleasantly surprised to discover that the Latin root for Trakoscan actually translates to "dragon" and "stone." My mother and I stayed at the hotel directly across from the castle and enjoyed a self guided tour the next morning. I would have liked to have an audio guide, but there didn't seem to be any available. Thankfully, there were plenty of informational plaques throughout each room and we had plenty of time to read them because we practically had the place to ourselves. Really beautiful place with an interesting history. Make sure you take the time to walk around the shores of the man-made lake. The castle was also used as the setting for a music video featuring 2Cellos.

Every summer, my husband and I always spend our weekend afternoon here whenever we are in Zagreb. Our fave place to drink coffee with friends. Many cafés around the street and I just like the feeling of taking your time like the locals drinking coffee while looking at the people passing by.
