The 10 Best Things to Do in Bottrop, Germany

March 30, 2018 Weston Hennigan

Bottrop (German pronunciation: [ˈbɔtʁɔp] ( listen)) is a city in west central Germany, on the Rhine-Herne Canal, in North Rhine-Westphalia. Located in the Ruhr industrial area, Bottrop adjoins Essen, Oberhausen, Gladbeck and Dorsten. The city had been a coal-mining and rail center and contains factories producing coal-tar derivatives, chemicals, textiles, and machinery. Bottrop grew as a mining center beginning in the 1860s, was chartered as a city in 1921, and bombed during the Oil Campaign of World War II. In 1975 it unified with the neighbour communities of Gladbeck and Kirchhellen, but Gladbeck left it in 1976, leading to Kirchhellen becoming a district of Bottrop as Bottrop-Kirchhellen.

This is certainly something thats unique and unusual. Especially in the Bottrop area of Germany, which isn't really a tourist hotspot. So its certainly a hidden gem to the more western visitors. But i do highly recommend, as it is so picturesque and unique. It makes for a great little hike to get to the pyramid, and once there, a very vertical stroll all the way up to the top. If you are scared of heights this probably isn't for you, but if you want to see a great 360 view of some German landscape, whilst onto of some modern architecture, then this is a must.

Grusellabyrinth NRW

Grusellabyrinth (Horror Labyrinth) is a brand new permanent scare attraction based in Bottrop, Germany. It is the latest manifestation of the Grusellabyrinth brand and was previously located in Kiel for the last 12 years. Targeted at families, this theatrical horror adventure for those aged 8 and above, is called 'Im Bann der Finsternis' (The Curse of Darkness) and features detailed environments, strange live characters and a gripping narrative which is presented in three dimensions. The attraction opened on Friday 13th February 2015 and is operational Freiday-Sunday. Guests enter the attraction in groups of up to 25, and the experience lasts around 100 minutes. At the end guests may recover in a Snack Bar. The story presented in the experience sits comfortably in the 'fantasy' genre, with clear inspiration from Tim Burton and Disney films. Unlike other scare attractions, there is no presentation of 'blood, guts and gore', here the narrative is subtle, strange and spooky. The attraction is located in an old pit, which appealed to the operators for its old and spooky natural atmosphere. After investing over one million Euro, the attraction has high production value, with its main emphasis on theatrical storytelling, rather than full on 'scare'. Using up to 11 live performers each operational period, Grusellabyrinth allows physical contact with guests, meaning you can and will get touched by the scareactors.

I found it quite entertaining, although I get scared very easy and I screamed a lot ?. The actors...just perfect! I recommend it mostly to grown ups, but if you have a child interested in such an entertainment, why not?

We made a pilgrimage to see this collection which may be a bit of a specialist interest. Albers' work is based on his teaching of colour back to the days of the Bauhaus. But the building and adjacent local museum did not disappoint us in any way. A bit of a treck to get there

In a little less than an hour we walked to Agustín Ibarrola's impressive piece of art crowning the artificial hill. The way up is decorated with spare parts of industrial engineering with brief explanations and the blackberries on the way were ripe. It path also displays the different steps of Jesus' crucifixion on the so-called "Kreuzweg", leading to a huge cross near the top. Besides the art, there's an Amphitheatre with regular events and a nice view over the (industrial) landscape. The place is popular with locals for walking, cycling and flying plane models.

This is the largest indoor ski facility. If its your fitst time hang in there. The staff assume that you know what you are doing. Check in was confusing as they only knew European shoe sizes. The after lining up to get your shoes you had to line up again to get snow board or ski equipment followed by another line to get a helmet. Once on the snow we were told that since we had no gloves we could not ski. So back inside to get gloves.
The skiing was great. Had we known that there was a school we would have taken classes but we only found the school after.
Everything is included which is nice. Full buffet lunch and drinks. The equipment is in good condition and we had a blast.
So , great activity, it just lacks information for first timers.

I visited with some friends in early April only to be refused entry. We had spent the day at Movie Park and had arrived at this park over an hour before closing but the woman on the gate announced that she had no tickets left so couldn't let us in. She refused to get someone higher up we could speak to. They literally turned down €77 business towards the end of the day. Utterly ridiculous.
The place looked desperately run down anyway.

Gesundheitspark Quellenbusch

Gesundheitspark - Quellenbusch:
