All this within 25 kilometers of Copenhagen center. It is right next to a beautiful big lake and it is a very special area. Most of the trees stand in water. There is an incredible bird life. If you own a canoe, this is also the place to go - the lake is perfect for that. If you prefer walking, there are many many possibilities. One of them is a very long walk all around the lake. But less can do it. If you are a nature lover, you will be enthralled.

A historic home, bird sanctuary, park, and museum all in one, located in the house of writer and Nobel Prize finalist Baroness Karen Blixen (in the US and UK, Isak Dinesen), known especially for "Out of Africa" and "Seven Gothic Tales". The museum not only maintains the 17th century house, Blixen's furnishings, and the park, but regularly hosts Exhibitions related to Blixen's life and work in Kenya and Denmark. Recent Exhibitions have included an exhibition "HER" by internationally acclaimed artist Candice Breitz about Meryl Streep's career.
This was an added bonus as we travelled down the coast line to Copenhagen. Nice welcome and helpful information by the lady who lets you in to the main house. You are allowed in at different times but we went in on our own and were able to ask lots of questions. The story is interesting even if you haven't read a lot about Karen Blixen - there is an introductory film. The house is lovely and the Gardens are pretty too. Opposite a very attractive harbour and on the main road with a small amount of parking.

On our 8 km long walk we met interesting people, picked & ate berries, saw ducks and deer, played with dogs, saw many families with children cycling or walking though it was not really a sunny day. Everything was well labelled and the path was easy to follow. The walk is long but not too demanding. I cannot recommend enough! A real gem so close to Copenhagen.

This place is apparently very popular amongst locals. We visited it because it's inscribed as a UNESCO world heritage site "Royal par force hunting grounds". This one includes a small castle, a golf course and deer heard roaming around freely. It was a lovely sunny afternoon and it made for a beautiful walk. Wonderful place, we really enjoyed it. Arrived by car, had no problems parking.

One of the three large lakes north of Copenhagen and the closest. Go for swimming, walking, cycling, canoeing, fishing, etc. MTB on the northwest forest.

Come and enjoy a spectacular Tree top adventure in our beautiful forrest close to Frederiksdal Slot.
We had some really fun hours at TilTops in Frederiksdal in the spring of 2016. The equipment is all of great quality, and you cannot fall down, even if you wanted to. Even though, you still feel the adrenaline rush when climbing those difficult stretches. I would love to give this place a higher rating, since it was so much fun. But the lanes have one major flaw, which I have not experienced at any other tree climbing facilities. The landing zone of the zip wires are dangerous, and we hurt ourselves on several occasions. You gain too much speed and only have a 1½ meter hard wooden landing zone to do a total stop on, before banging into the tree in the other end. On other tree top climbing facilities there are usually a pillow or similar to slow you down, once you reach the end. The fact that you have to use your feet to stop the movement, on such short space, resulted in some hard bangs. And once, when I did not raise my feet quite enough, they were smashed into the raw edge of the wood, resulting in a sprain and several days of painful walking. I really want to try out this tree climbing lane again, if they change the landing strips of the zip lanes, or decrease the speed you gain. Before that, I do not dare to.

The mansion in itself is adorable - just outside Copenhagen and less visited probably but worth the detour if there is a nice exhibition, as the house itself doesn't visit on its own.
There is also a beautiful baroque garden - maybe more pleasing in summer, but nevertheless intriguing with its strict architecture.
The restaurant which also visits without going into the museum is very nice and cosy. Laid back decoration feeling like you are dining at friends; excellent card and very nicely prepared food.
Definitely worth keeping an eye on their Exhibitions!

This historic castle was constructed on three Islands and is surrounded by lake and beautiful Gardens. Frederiksborg Castle has housed The Museum of National History since 1878. A tour through the museum's many beautiful rooms is an encounter with kings, queens, nobles, the bourgeois, events, and epochs, which have all shaped the country's history and development from the Middle Ages to the 21st century. The museum was founded by brewer J.C. Jacobsen, the founder of Carlsberg.
If you are visiting in winter, the castle closes at 3pm. This is due to the lack of daylight. Rooms 1-36 are the best (beginning with the Chapel and ending with the Great Hall. The rooms are lavishly decorated. The castle grounds are impressive and beautiful. Allow an hour to tour the castle. We were rushed through in only 30 minutes because of the early closing time. See the castle first and then tour the grounds. The grounds stay open later. IMPORTANT: You must pay to park here. The parking sign and payment kiosk are not at all obvious. We did not see them upon our arrival and returned to find a 650K/$100 USD ticket on our windshield! The ticket agent sits in the parking lot waiting for tourists not to notice that they have to pay. Don’t forget. It is 20k for 2 hours. Castle Ticket is included on your Copenhagen Card.

December evenings - even afternoons - can get quite gloomy in Denmark, since darkness comes creeping so very early in the day. With the barren trees, there is little to cheer you up. This is probably why Christmas decorations start earlier and earlier in the shops every year, and explains why Danes love candles so much.
Hørsholm Church is situated on a diminutive island, very prettily surrounded by lakes with swans and ducks, and beautiful trees, in what once were the castle Gardens of Royal Castle Hirschholm. This allows the church to stand in serene majesty, both summer and winter.
The area around the church is visited daily, very popular for walking your dog, or bicycling in the lovely surroundings. On one side of the church is Gl. Hovedgade, the original main street of Hørsholm, with quaint old houses, restored and still inhabited. It is quite an experience just to take a walk there. On the other side are museums, both for local history, and for agriculture. The latter has a nice little café.
Hirschholm Castle set the scene for one of the most spectacular romantic dramas in Danish history - this was where Queen Caroline Mathilde had her love affair with the royal physician Johann Friederich Struensee in the summer of 1771. Their daughter Louise Augusta was born that summer, christened in the church that was the castle chapel then. All trace of this very unfortunate story was sent into oblivion: Struensee met his end, the Queen was deported, the castle was torn down. Spared were only the Gardens and the chapel, left to deteriorate.
But the grounds are so lovely, and in 1823 the Hørsholm Church we see today, was built and ready once again. Beautiful architecture, perfectly designed for the surroundings.
There is still a definite air of romance about the place, and every year the church houses a Christmas Carols concert. I went there last year with my significant other on an icy cold December night. The church is lit up by lanterns in the ground, which makes a truly lovely scene with the white walls, black roof, and the black branches from the winter barren trees. Normally I do not enjoy queuing, but waiting to enter was for once a breath taking experience.
Once inside, people were happily anticipating the concert, many evidently come every year. The concert itself - Marie Carmen Koppel singing Gospel carols - was wonderful, embodying the essence of Christmas for all attending. We will certainly return every year.
