Helmsdale (Scots: Helmsdal, Scottish Gaelic: Bun Ilidh) is a village on the east coast of Sutherland, in the Highland council area of Scotland. The modern village was planned in 1814 to resettle communities that had been removed from the surrounding straths as part of the Highland Clearances.

Food was deep fried and icky. Burger was super-processed. Didn't finish our meal.
Beer recommendation was good, and staff was very nice and accommodating. Easy to access from road, easy parking. Cheap. Lots of interesting historic books on the shelves. Other patrons were very nice.
We were driving back to Invergordon from Girnigoe around dinner time, and were starving.

Granted it was a busy night in Helmsdale but the owner / burger flipper was hopelessly out of his depth. He rejected us, a group of 40/50 somethings for swearing (which we didn't) by swearing himself.
The young girl attempting to serve us was clearly a newish start but was infinitly more professional than Gordon Pansy.

Came upon this place by accident when we stopped for lunch whilst doing the NC500. Most impressed as they do soup, Sandwich and hot drink deal for £7.95. It was delicious. Great coffee, home made pumpkin soup and huge Sandwich. Lovely setting with delightful staff. The cakes looked amazing although we resisted the temptation.

Situated beside the River Helmsdale, the Riverside Cafe offers homebaking and light lunches. There are tables outside where you can sit and watch the local wildlife, or you can sit indoors and look out on the herb garden.
Stopped off at this nice little cafe en route to Orkney ferry for coffee and cake. The service was very good and the coffee and cake did their job. Didn't visit the adjacent museum but spent a few minutes in the geology garden outside looking...MoreMany thanks for the positive review. The Riverside Cafe is a good place to stop when you are travelling to and from the Orkney Ferries.

Cafe and Craft/Gift shop at the beautiful Helmsdale Harbour. Home prepared sandwiches, snacks and cakes. Wide selection of coffees and teas. Cold drinks and Ice Creams.
Great place with tables inside, outside and in the conservatory for sunny but breezy days - spoilt for choice. The coffee was great with lots of choice. You can have ice-cream, cake or a bigger snack with your drink too. There is an interesting mix of things for sale from crafted items and the bits & bobs to do your own crafting; through gifts and clothing to midge repellent. (although I should say that we were there in midge season and there was no issue) . Speaking to the owners when we were there, we know that they have big plans to make it even better. Wish that we had taken a photo but at the time I didn't realise that there wasn't going to be one on already.
