La Fontana

Reviewed By Uhuru966 - Timbuktu

La Fontana is an authenic Italian restaurant in the Old Town area of Hamelin.
Surprisingly, it sports a delightful restaurant garden, accessible through a tunnel from the restaurant proper.
The Italian cuisine menue is extensive. We ordered (1) a shared antipasto plate, then (2) basil and goat cheese gnocchi, and (3) melanzane-alla-parmigiana.
All were nicely presented. Tastewise, #1 and #3 were OK, but positively lacked a touch of garlic, and even some salt. # 3 was just perfect.
The service was attentive and timely.
Overall, a good dining experience, albeit there is room for improvement.

Pfannekuchen

Reviewed By PfredIII - East Lyme, CT

If you want something different for lunch or dinner, this may be an option. Pfannekuchen is a German pancake (thin style) house that has both sweet and savory pancake dishes. They are very reasonably priced and serve adult beverages too. I enjoyed a cheese, ham and spinach stuffed bacon (in the batter) pancake. It was good and filling with a good balance of all 3 ingredients. The only disappointment was the service. Clearly my server didn't seem to want to be there. I was here once before but didn't stay and that same server didn't seem too interested then either. The food is good if a pancake meal is what you want. If a dining experience is what your expecting with attentive service, I might consider an alternative choice. I saw another couple leave after what seemed to be too short a stay to have a meal. There hours of operation are not suited for a pancake breakfast as they open at 11am.

Zum Schultheiss

The Family History It seems that the Kretschmer family have service to other in their blood, for they have now been serving both the German civil, and the British military communities for three generations! The post war years were difficult for everyone, but George Kretschmer, who had worked his way up to head waiter and successfully run an establishment in Breslau and his wife Charlotte, moved to Hameln and founded on the 24th May 1952 the family business "Zum Schultheiss". The newly built building next to the Horse Chestnut lined street Ilphulweg offered the ideal opportunity! The nearby Linsingen Kaserne (Gordon Barracks) along with the fact that the town centre was less than five minutes away plus a pleasantly green "Biergarten" made a most comfortable setting for his new Enterprise. Almost immediately the Britsh community took to the friendly atmosphere, which led to a boom in buisiness and a very happy phase in the life of the, as yet, infant concern, now namend Georges Bar. As time passed as it inevitably does Georges Bar was supported and then eventually run by his son Wolfgang and his wife Marlies, who with much e'lan and innovation, made great strides toward the, by now, "Restaurant Zum Schultheiss". From fairly simple homely cooking, the kitchen, under the super- vision of Marlies Kretschmer took on more and more sophisticated dishes, and with the energetic assistance of their, by now, grown son Jörg rivalled the best in Hameln. Just as his father before him Jörg, already a qualified chef, took on his Master-Chef examinations and in 1998 qualified and is now competent to pass on his own experience to young budding chefs who may now undertake their own training under his supervision. Several conversions and extensions were now to take place leading to the pleasant ambience of today's bar and restaurant, culminating in the opening of the "Hotel Kretschmer" each room, fitted out in the Bavarian style, having shower, toilet, Television and telephone available. The reputation of the cuisine Zum Schultheiss has now spread far outside the boundaries of Hameln and is set fair to travel farther as the motto of the house is:.- The Customer is King

We had a lovely meal here the other night. It was such a shame that the restaurant was closed for so long. The food was delicious and the service great! Thank you for a great evening!

We live in Hameln but this was the first time we had eaten here. We took my parents the Saturday after Christmas and I'm glad we booked as we wouldn't have got a table otherwise. Quite a long wait for service but when the food did arrive it was fantastic! Very basic steak and chips but the portion was huge and the steak was beautiful. Will definitely be going back!

This is probably the most touristy restaurant in Hameln. The restaurant is supposedly the Pied Piper's house from the 13th century (I think). Anyway, they specialize in German fare for obvious reasons. It seemed quite authentic. The room decor was more traditional as well.
Overall it was a good dining experience while in Hameln.

I was there a couple of days ago. It is a small restaurant (6-8 small tables), comfortable and nice. The pasta was delicious. The tagliatelle with shrimps were excellent. We did not try the pizza, but it looked really nice, too. Very good service, for a good price.

Being form Texas, we enjoy our Mexican food. We found this in the heart of Hamln and got excited. Unfortunately, when we asked for a table for two, we were told "nein" that we had to have a reservation. However, the next group that entered also had no Reservations and were allowed to stay. I have NEVER been refused service at any restaurant in the world! This was a horrible impression that we were left with for Hameln. Maybe because we only speak English?? Our money still spends like anyone else, though!

I regard this as the best beer hall and eatery in Hamelin. The Krug has real character and the ambience is wonderful. The service is friendly and efficient and they serve a wide variety of traditional dishes.
The rat theme fits perfectly with the whole town's theme and no matter what the weather outside, you will have a good time. I met some delightful locals and despite a language barrier managed to have a great time.
A must visit.

You'll have to use your GPS to find this fine restaurant down what is pretty much a single lane road deep buried in the woods, but you'll be happy you did. This appears to be a husband and wife team that really cares about the food and the establishment and it shows. I had the opportunity to go with a colleague from the area and all of us were impressed. I had a beef filet with pepper sauce that was fantastic. Both the hostess and chef spoke English and assisted this American in understanding the menu and were very helpful in describing the choices available. As always we found another perfect poor of the local draft Pilsner as well as some good wine choices.
While I was there on business, it would be perfect for couples also. I would imagine it would be perfect on a hot summer night also.
