Since opening in December 2007, the restaurant has built a reputation for serving one of the best breakfasts in Clarens. Describing his recent breakfast at 278 on Main, Brendan Seery, Executive Editor, The Star said "The omelettes and cappuccinos are the equivalent of the best anywhere in the world."The breakfast menu ranges from cereal with yoghurt and honey for the not so hungry to a hearty English breakfast. On the menu throughout the day are a variety of salads comprising fresh farm produce wherever possible and mouth-watering sweet and savoury pancakes. You'll find many international favourites like toasted cheese & tomato as well as scrumptious treats served on ciabattas or toasted paninis. When the weather is chilly, a bowl of Sue's home-made soup or one of her speciality pasta dishes is always a good option. And if you're not in a hurry, the Beef & Guiness or Chicken & Mushroom pies are well worth waiting for. Or if you're simply in the mood for a sweet treat you can't go wrong with the chocolate brownies, scones and cream or freshly baked muffins.Dinner is always a culinary delight - try the vegetable spring rolls, duck liver pate with toasted ciabatta or the baked camembert with melba toast. Main course specialities include, lamb shank, melt-in-the mouth lamb curry, oxtail and stir fries. End your meal with one of Sue's outrageously decadent desserts.
Really good breakfast. Friends were staying at the B&B and we joined them for breakfast. All the food was good and the home baked breads and home made jams were excellent. Coffee was good and made as I requested. Friendly and efficient service from the owner and her team.

For over 10 years a family run pub and restaurant. Great menu. Live music venue over weekends. Very well locally supported as well as our wonderful regular weekend 'local' visitors. Check our Facebook page for updates on food and drink specials as well as live music updates.
The food is well prepared, Homemade Pies, Delish Hamburgers and a Salmon and Blue Cheese Pasta dish to die for!!! The Manageress come bar lady Liz is friendly, customer service orientated and has her customers coming back for more!! Pet friendly bar and a locals hang out. The waitpersons remember you by name and are very attentive. The Grouse have the occasional live music adding an attractive atmosphere and general all round "great experience"to the evening out. The management and staff have recently upgraded the establishment and it is clean, looks attractive inside and out. A 'bikers' hand out-saw an amazing display of old bikes parked out in front of the Restaurant, met lovely people and enjoyed the evening.

German style restaurant with amazing meals,a lot of different beers to choose from and friendly and helpful staff. The view is spectacular and well worth a visit if in Clarens for a day or two.
Pretty decent on the inside. Offers a variety of goods as it is a deli and restaurant. I enjoy my food however dessert was a total let down. Not fresh and crepe was reheated in a microwave which made it chewy, terrible imitation of nutella. Had devils cake and texture was dry. The beer was amazing. Ester was our waitress and she was honest and good.

Average restuarant. We're a family of 4 and ordered steak. We all like it done differently ranging from medium to medium well. Unfortunately everything came more on the well done side. When you're so hungry from waiting so long for the meal to arrive we decided to just eat it instead of sending it back.

We were all feeling like chocolate cake and went to every cafe/shop looking for chocolate cake. After 7 attempts we came across this little cafe. We walked in and owner (we think) served us. We asked if they had cake and if they do take aways. He said they had choc cake, cheesecake & lemon meringue. He went to the kitchen and returned a few mins later with a small slice of each for all of us to taste plus a glass of water each. So sweet. We took couple of slices of choc cake and lemon meringue. He also offered us some crunchies to taste. Can highly recommend. Choc cake was so chocolatey but not to sweet and lemon meringue was so creamy and smooth lemon Centre. Good value for money and will definitely go back

We stumbled around Carlen’s, having recently landed on an overnight flight from Europe, looking for something to eat. All of us could find something that sounded great on the menu, so we went for it.
Two of us had curry, there are 2 different ones on the menu, so it was one each. They were both fantastic, some of the best curry we have had for a long time. Neither suffered from the British Curry Problem, where they put piles of sugar into it.
Our son, who would live only eating Pizza if we let him chose the Pizza.
When discussing if we should return the following day, he revealed the Pizza was not at all nice, shame that I wanted another curry.
The bill for our meal, with wine, was pleasantly low.

We are a micro-roastery, and take great care and pride in roasting our 100% Arabica coffees to perfection in small batches. Our roastery, shop and espresso bar is in the Maluti Highlands Centre, where you can sit and relax with a cup of freshly roasted, freshly ground and perfectly prepared coffee and enjoy the beautiful view of Mount Horeb.
Very cute little coffee shop with great coffee! The BonBon was very good, and the filter coffee was really great quality.
