We looked for decent beach access, while driving between Ciudad del Carmen and Champoton (Hwy180) and couldn't find one until restaurant Bahia de Tortugas. It's right on the beach. There had been storm therefore staff and friendly Englishman, a co-owner removed sand from property. We spent most of afternoon on beach. While our 3-year old played in sand we had tasty sups and salads and cold beer from wide selection of Mexican beers.

We stopped here for an early dinner only upon noticing their billboards with the great food photo. We were surprised at how quiet it was. Yes, it was off the beach, but the food and ambiance more than made up for the location. Our group of 12 were quickly served some great botanas - fresh scampi in the shells, frijolitos, etc. The drinks were served quickly and were exactly what we needed after the long drive from Villahermosa! The wine was appropriately chilled!
Every one ordered something different, albeit with shrimp, and every dish was hot and wonderful tasting - shrimp ceviche, pasta with shrimp, etc. The menu is quite varied. The bill was efficiently handled and we were on our way in good time.
Don't stop along the beach before coming to Champoton...GO to Coco Paraiso and you will never go anywhere else! What a great place and great staff!!!!!
While there say hello to Antonio Cruz, the gerente. Did I mention that they also have rooms?

Although this place is not much to look at, it's definitely worth a visit. The staff is as friendly as can be and the sea food is fresh and very well cooked. However, it's the restaurant's award winning --no joke-- signature dish that will make it worth your while: "Pan de cazón". It's basically a tortilla "cake" filled with cazón --or dogfish in English-- and beans, covered with tomato sauce.
May you find yourself in the neighborhood, swing by.

This restaurant is located on road 180 near the sea. Great traditional Mexican food, seafood and of course fish. We had for starter an excellent fish soup with shrimp, fish and octopus and also a shrimp filled emparedados which was very tasty.
For main course we had fried shrimps with a coconut sauce which was very crispy and very good, and a grilled skewer of shrimps, bacon and vegetables which was excellent. Since they do not serve alcohol at all, we had to stick to a huge jar with fresh lemonade with a lot of ice to cool us down.
Not so cheap but very recommended (!)
