My second visit to The Millcroft (Headwaters Restaurant) is worth a second review.
The second visit was as good as the first. Yep, ordered the rib eye again. Man oh man that is thee best steak I've ever had!
Jaclyn was our server again and she completely added to the outstanding experience.
Highlights of the Millcroft:
Amazing retro ambiance
Delicious and authentic menu
Dining room tables are well spaced
Not too loud
Perfect service
The drive getting there
The genuine attitudes of the staff
I would rate the Millcroft a ten out of ten for all of the above mentioned. Me being the food and restaurant snob that I am, it's quite refreshing to experience this little get away in Alton.
I hope to return many times when I visit Ontario.

This is a small scale cidery in an interesting straw bale construction building, with a wood fired oven. There is a bake shop (savoury and sweet) and it is open for dinner Friday night only.
Over the years, we have watched Spirit Estate Cidery grow. The shop expanded, the bakery was added, and then a restaurant with Friday night wood fired pizza. I haven’t been back to eat there in about a year and wow, it’s amazing!
Spirit Estate Cidery is fast becoming a destination for lunch on Thursday thru Sunday and dinner Thursday thru Saturday. The new chef has updated the menu beautifully. Her signature dressing on the house salad is so good I asked if they sold the bottle of it in the boutique part of the shop. Oh yeah, did I mention this is a restaurant plus bakery plus cider mill plus local artisan shop plus local pre-packaged butcher shop? Oh yeah, baby. Foodies, this is a definite must. You will not be disappointed. It is beyond worth a trip. And with an outdoor patio area in warm months, with a gorgeous vista, you want to weep with joy for a wonderful Ontario moment!
We learned there’s a new female chef from a year ago when we ate in house last - kudos to the owner! The menu is fantastic now and the pizza has only gotten better! The lunch and dinner menu has been rounded it with amazing entrees and wonderful specials. Today included a corn chowder with coconut and jalapeño. There are only about 8-10 indoor tables plus the bar, so limited Seating. Pizza is the thing that’s a must try - focaccia style at lunch and thin crust for dinner. There’s also take out. There’s also other wonderful items on the menu including a cheese fondue and a charcuterie board that is the best Ontario had to offer.
The beverage of choice is their award winning cider. The lovely pear and pumpkin seasonal cider even won my mom over who made a face when I ordered it, but proclaimed it crisp, spicy and amazing! While I do wish they would add wine too, I’m ok with the cider only for now. I think this should be there next expansion though.
They have a lovely bar, that as a Terra Cotta local, I would be happy to sit at. The staff is tremendously lovely and open to questions and suggestions. Not pretentious, just genuinely nice and helpful.
You can’t leave without buying the bread cooked inter wood fired oven and the other goodies. I left with Tartine bread, local cheese, in-house English muffins, on-alcoholic cider (I love it warmed up on a crisp night), Butter de Paris (sinfully yummy), in-house chicken liver pate, Ontario cheese and more. The baked goods are all done in-house including an scones, tarts, quiche, and more.
I can’t say enough about this place. Worth a ride from Toronto (45-65 minutes depending on traffic) and amazing for locals for Caledon, Orangeville, and George Town. My favourite bread bakery, hands down. And I forgot to mention the apples their orchards are famous for! Yummy, delicious! You’ve got to go!

We were passing through Alton and decided to stop for lunch. We had heard about Ray's and thought we would try eating there. We were lucky to get in without a reservation. The menu was presented on a large blackboard which was novel. The offerings looked tempting. Our choice, pork tourtiere with salad, was simply delicious. Service was good and the prices reasonable. We will come again in warmer weather when we can enjoy the outdoor Terrace.

Outstanding from start to finish. Colleen, the coordinator, made us feel so comfortable and confident in our choices when we met with her. The day of the party, we arrived to find every detail taken care of exactly to our request. The staff of servers were extremely friendly and professional, identifying all of our needs and making us and all of our guests feel special. Chef Roberto served an extraordinary antipasto platter and prime rib dinner that the guests are still raving about.

We have passed this place many times on way to Collingwood and finally decided to go in for lunch. I had the cheese and potato pierogi, husband had pork schnitzel with mashed potatoes and we shared a small Greek salad (which was huge). Everything was fresh and well made. My husband is Eastern European and was delighted with the authentic quality of the food. Do save room for the crepes. The tchotchkes will make you cringe but I didn't see any dust, it is a diner so go and enjoy the food not the atmosphere.

This is one of our favourite places to go for breakfast. Lunch and dinner is just underwhelming. I find even the service is not as good for dinner. Highly recommend for breakfast/brunch though!
