I arrive in Braganca late evening looking for somewhere to eat, stumbled upon the Restaurante Pocas. Had all my motorcycle kit with me, not sure how proprietors would respond but they welcomed me in - restaurant full downstairs but plenty of room upstairs. Service was quick and friendly, food was delicious and plenty of it. I was the last person to leave but at no time was I being rushed - all round a great friendly place - recommended.

This is a beautiful place in the central square of the historic centre of Braganca. Its situated in an old mansion and serves traditional Northern dishes (eg I had pheasant with chestnuts). Not many tourists go to Braganca, but if they do this is definitely an experience worth exploring.
It would be easy to miss this excellent restaurant without the advice of other TripAdvisor reviews. The entrance from street level leads to the first floor and you enter a restaurant furnished in traditional style.
The welcome was fulsome and the choices we made, Chestnut soup, Montesinho lamb and Sole were beautifully prepared and presented. Excellent House Wine and Port completed a memorable culinary experience. Thank you.

At the Pousada they recommended Geadas. It is from the same company owners. It is also located in an unexpected roadside setting for this quality restaurant. For appetizers they brought a mixed plate of prosciutto, cheese, chorizo, olives and olive oil toasted bread slices. Excellent. we ordered the partridge stewed in vinegar, chorizo and onions and served with fried potatoes, chestnuts and a chestnut puree. This is definitively one of the best partridges we ever tasted. Less successful was the choice of grilled mixed cuts of pork as some pieces were too dry . For dessert they had some natural pineapple as fresh fruit, a rarity in most restaurant leaning into heavy dessert offering. The service was extremely efficient and friendly. The wine selection is very good and at good prices.

A traditional kind of restaurant, not for the faint of heart. Generous portions and well prepared food.
They also offer a tourist menu, which we had, and it provides enough food for a family! By the time you're wondering how you'll able to digest all of that they'll ask if there's *anything else* they can bring you.
In the end they even offered a shot of their quince liquor - probably because we had proved worthy to be of the honour! :-D

Cosy Italian Restaurtant. Familiar environment, with an excellent and carismatic Pizzaiolo. Also serves traditional Portuguese "Transmontano" food.
I find it hard to explain why I can get a better pizza from the takeaway chain in my home town than in this specialist restaurant rated the best in town. Also It was disappointing to find the menu only in the local language in this tourist spot, surely it would be in their interest and simple good business sense to cater to their varied target audience.

As you will notice from my reviews, I'm quite knowledgeable about the Bragança region in what concerns restaurants. But today all my expectations (always high in this region), were exceeded by far. If you like good meat, grilled in simplicity and totally based on the quality of the the meat itself, this is where you want to go. This will be my place of choice for my future meals!

O Careto is located about 15 minutes' drive north of Braganca in the picturesque village of Varge. The setting is beautiful and the restaurant, which is quite large, looks appropriately rustic, warm and welcoming, both inside and out. Inside there is an open fire, stag-head trophies mounted on the walls and unusual coat racks that utilise deer hooves as hooks. You do get the idea that meat might be the thing here.
We were taken here by a Portuguese friend who assured us it was a popular local place for traditional Portuguese food. We had already eaten quite a bit of 'traditional' Portuguese fare - heavily salted meat or fish served up in huge portions with rice and boiled vegetables - and are not big fans, so were a little wary. Sure enough, the restaurant delivered what we expected, There was no written menu, and the main-course options were limited to a choice of pork, steak, chicken or fish. If you visit this place without a Portuguese speaker you might have some trouble. That goes for vegetarians, too, though they could probably get by on the vegetable soup and the green salad that consisted of just roughly chopped lettuce doused in olive oil. Sophisticated the food is not. The meals came out on large platters - much more than any one person could reasonably expect to eat. I ordered the Bacalao, a monstrous lump of heavily salted cod that proved more than a match for me. I swear it will be the last time I ever order that dish. We did enjoy the red wine, though, which was made on the premises.
Dessert, coffee and port wine were offered, but no-one could squeeze in another morsel. The bill came to 70 Euros for five, but cheap for this neck of the woods, but there was a hell of a lot of food put in front of us.

One of the nicest place for lunch or dinner in Bragança. A very wonderful combination of traditional food and Italian food and with an extremely friendly service. This place has been a success since its opening and every day is a treat. Desserts are also outstanding and the place, although quite large, is not loud and there is more than enough privacy between tables. They also have a wonderful take away service.

An eating house that revives the environment lived cafes and taverns that have helped democratize the flavor snack, good steak, a piece of pig meat. A concept " Lisbon " and cuts across all ages, all statutes, all ethnicities and Trás . And we say , with the world's greatest pride , that " we are probably the only tavern in the world known for its Mirandesa meat nails !"
Sleeping in our camper van at the base of Braganca castle, we were looking for a good place to eat that night. Home-cooking is ok but sometimes you need a bit of pampering. Looking at the reviews “Tosca do Ze Tuga” came highly recommended and so we staggered up the 200m hill to the castle and just inside the walls we found our restaurant, which in the mid afternoon sun, with guests sitting out on the veranda drinking in the view, whilst listening to Fado music, seemed the perfect place for our dinner, so we booked. You need to visit this restaurant, not just because of its perfect setting by the green in the ancient floodlit fort, nor for the charm and welcoming of the chefs’, nor to copy the locals who flock to the tables, but mainly because it’s a very good unpretentious restaurant serving very good locally sourced food. Try the all in chef’s menu with two starters, soup, main, pudding and coffee, together with an aperitif to start and some Ginja to finish. You’ll be in the chef’s hands but they’ll not let you down.
We left the fort and zoomed down the hill feeling total sated and as though we’d just left some new friends.
Great food, great atmosphere, great occasion. Thanks to all the staff and owners.
