July 13, 2017 Mollie Coke

Boscastle (Cornish: Kastel Boterel) is a village and fishing port on the north coast of Cornwall, England, UK, in the civil parish of Forrabury and Minster (where the 2011 Census population was included) . It is 14 miles (23 km) south of Bude and 5 miles (8 km) northeast of Tintagel. The harbour is a natural inlet protected by two stone harbour walls built in 1584 by Sir Richard Grenville and is the only significant harbour for 20 miles (32 km) along the coast. The village extends up the valleys of the River Valency and River Jordan. Heavy rainfall on 16 August 2004 caused extensive damage to the village.

Was passing while visiting beautiful Boscastle and fancied a late breakfast, was met by friendly staff, very nice decor. Prompt service and most importantly the food was absolutely delicious. We had the Midi breakfast, good price, all freshly cooked. Will definitely call in again. Was quiet at 1130 but much busier when we passed by later for lunch service, so suggest booking.

I came very close to giving this picturesque and cosy old Inn a couple of stars fewer but they redeemed themselves in the end and I strongly suspect that, on another day, our experience would have been better.
A horrible, rainy day in Tintagel and we all felt the lure of a hearty and warming Cornish Pasty. There are many cafes, pubs and tea shops to choose from in Tintagel and we chose this one on the basis that it looked inviting and, moreover, had a sign prominently displayed outside, extolling the virtues of the traditional pasty and suggesting we eat one on the premises.
We found the staff very friendly and welcoming but, when we asked for 5 pasties, they responded that there was only one left. This was not late in the day and, indeed, I heard two more parties of people come in and ask for pasties.
We were disappointed but, rather than return to the rainy high street, we decided to be philosophical and choose alternatives.
I chose the crab Sandwich from the specials board and, ten minutes later, was informed that there were no crab sandwiches left. I had now lost my sense of humour about this and decided to have a drink only, picking up a snack later on elsewhere. Meanwhile, my dad ate the solitary pasty which was so dried up that he had a really tough job cutting through the pastry. The filling was equally desiccated and we suspected it had been keep warm for a prolonged time.
What really irked me, though, was that they were advertising what they didn't actually have - after all, this is how people choose where to eat and we rejected other eateries on this basis. When we left, the pasty sign was still on the pavement outside and the crab had not been removed from the specials board.
However, the food that the rest of the party ate was good, the prices were fair and the service remained friendly and attentive. Moreover, when we went to pay and my dad mentioned the condition of his pasty, they unhesitatingly compensated us by removing that item plus all of the drinks from the bill. I thought this was a fair and proportional response, made gracefully and, for that reason, would give the place another chance.

Been to Boscastle many times and been to 'the welly' on most visits. We had no reason not to visit this time, but now we wish we had stayed away as we endured one of the most awful dining experiences I can remember!
We made a point of going in early afternoon to reserve a table next to the fire where we thought we could settle our two dogs out of the way, no problem we were told!... Arrive early evening to be told they had given our table to another party and we were now sat at a table and the very far end of the restaurant?
We then waited 50 mins for our food even though the place was virtually empty due to storm 'brian' raging outside!
Of our four mains, two were mussels which were deemed way below par as too gritty! A complaint was made to the manager who agreed not to charge for one of the mains.
We ask for our bill and notice that an expensive bottle of red wine had somehow appeared! Back to the manager who agrees we didn't have any wine with our meals!
There is nothing I can recommend about this place! Stay well away!

Had a delightful lunch with a lovely cup of tea, surrounded in an Aladdin’s cave of Cornish produce to purchase and a well stocked deli counter.
This quaint little establishment was overseen by a lovely young lady whose manner was one of kindness and enthusiasm- delicious sand which was eaten with pleasure- many thanks x
