Located in a 16th cellar, this fabulous family run restaurant had lovely staff, a charming chef who provided helpful suggestions about the menu and wines and amazing fondue in every variation imaginable.
We loved this restaurant so much we ate here twice in 3 days, something I have never done before on a holiday.
It was also packed with locals which is always a good sign.

already the drive up to 10xx Meters altitude is cool.
we've been welcomed very heartly and got our table (reservation is needed). There was also a big group celebrating a birthday. This actually was the only drawback....it was quite noisy.
Service was very helpfull and they took care of us.
Food was at a high level, very very good...though a bit pricy
Location wonderful
We only can recommend this place for a change ....really good

I've had the pleasure of eating at the Hof many times over the last 20+ years. Favourites include the mixed salad and spätzli, plus many more..... It's still typical Appenzell, reasonably priced with good sized portions of well presented and very tasty food.

We stopped during a hike for lunch and had a great meal. The bratwurst and frites were great as as the gemischter salad (mixed salad).

Right on the small main square in Appenzell, this place has a Terrace on the square that is fantastic when the weather is good. Touristy, but for good reason!Dear Paul Thank you for your visit and the great review. We hope to welcome you another time in Appenzell. Have a nice day. …can be found with us at the Bären. Century-old cladded walls and rustic wooden floors are evidence of the wealth of history in the building. For example in the past the building occupied by the Bären was used for a spice store, a post office, an embroidery room and also a bakery. This interesting past makes the Bären so unique and should not be forgotten even in the 21st century. Examples include the wine cellar with its vaulted ceiling dating back to the Middle Ages, the forge that has been brought back to life, the display cabinet with in-house specialities, the cosy taverna with its copper chimney or the various cosy alcoves on the first floor. In our historic Bären with its stylish decor a unique atmosphere awaits you with genial warmth and friendliness from the Appenzell. Regardless of which room(s) you select: we will treat you during your stay with us to lots of Appenzell cordiality and of course to local but also international delicacies from our kitchen.
We had a very large room in the dependance. It was almost like an appartment (no kitchen). The staff is very friendly and the restaurant in the main house can be highly recommended.

If you are faint at heart then you may want to avoid this restaurant. One must ride a ski lift that scales steep mountain cliffs then hike a short distance along a safe but rocky path, that winds through a damp cave and gets very narrow at parts.
But once there, this restaurant is perched in a place with an incredible view. I had the hash browns with cheese and two fried eggs. It was deeeeeeelicious.
If you want a "once in a lifetime" restaurant experience, don't pass this up.

Facilities in this modernized and upper class hotel are great, as is food. The rooms were well-equipped. The pool is fantastic and there are many outdoor activities to take advantage of in this beautiful area. Do bear in mind that this hotel also serves as a high-class rehab centre with the corresponding clientelle.

What a great little jewel .. we discovered here. A great location in the center of the little and very historical town. A beautifully painted Building (exterior) and inside a typical Swiss style of restaurant.
Fast, friendly and efficient service - Well prepared Food .. all local fare, big portions and reasonable prizes.
There is also a big outdoor garden with plenty of tables available ... that is.. if the weather is not too cold..... (We visited in Spring)
We can highly recommend this place - Don't miss it !

Just barely off the large square in town, the zur Linde offers a small outdoor (in good weather) area to eat and drink and a typical Swiss and Appenzell interior. Every Wednesday in the evening around 7 or so, a group of local folks come in and socialize and sing older Appenzeller songs all a capella. Their voices are strong and sweet and it is a wonderful way to get a sense of the area and its hard-working people. The food is, by the way, some of the best Swiss fare you will find anywhere. Chicken with morels? Kalbsbratwurst with rosti? Spaetzli? Send me in, coach!
