De Krans Wine Cellar is situated along the upper reaches of the picturesque Gamka River Valley near Calitzdorp. The history of the farm dates back to 1890, when it was bought by the Nel family. Since 1985, most of the classic Portuguese port and wine varieties have been planted. De Krans is widely known as one of the leading port producers, as well as one of the most innovative cellars in South Africa. The Farm offers daily wine tasting, a country style bistro and a deli offering products either produced on the farm or sourced from local artisans.
We love the Calitzdorp area, so don't judge the town by just passing through it on the R62, it won't impress. Apart from the many attractions around it, a little meander through the town, reveals some beautifully restored buildings. De Krans one of the premier local port producers is a household name, and attracts a great many visitors. Apart from the port and wine tasting area, it has for some time now had a dining area - the bistro, with indoor and outdoor Seating, which we'd seen but not been to. As it was over the New Year period, the lunch venue we had planned to go to was closed, so De Krans was our choice. Not a gourmet venue, but friendly welcome staff, and very user-friendly menu, ideal for adults and children, we enjoyed our lunch and its on our list, so worth the short drive off the main road in an attractive setting.

At No. 16 Queen Street you will find Penny's Place. A unique combination of coffee shop and gallery. The diverse art on display is representative of many local artists and those from neighbouring towns. The coffee shop offers delicious home baked cakes and quiches. Well recommended by many tripadvisor reviewers! Creamy Hot chocolate to warm you in winter and homemade Iced Coffee, lemonade and iced tea to cool you down in summer. Open Tuesday to Saturday 10am to 4pm

From Calitzdorp we drove up to the top of the pass and back. Spectacular views. Narrow road and rocky but driveable. Quiet. Ideal challenge for cyclers looking for something challenging. Somehow the locals do not promote the drive out to see this heritage area.

Calitzdorp Cellar is located in Calitzdorp, known for it's variety of Wines and Port. It is part of the world’s longest wine route and has produced a number of award winning white, red and fortified wines since 1928. Come and enjoy our wines in our Tasting Room or a bottle of wine on our veranda overlooking the Gamka-valley.
We stopped by this place at the last minute. It was worth the stop. The staff was very friendly and knowledgeable about their wines and the local area. The wine tasting was nice and relaxed while enjoying a great conversation with staff. If you're driving through take the time to stop in this place. I'd like to return for a stay over and check out the breakfast the others writing reviews mentioned..

Horse Trails (day and overnight trails) Heritage Mountain Safaris in open vintage Land Rovers.
We had planned for a long weekend of multiple trail rides. We managed one ride and abandoned after 10 minutes on the second ride. We just could not subject these thoroughbreds to being ridden under such conditions. The horses were emaciated, their hooves were in...MoreThank you so much for your review, we always appreciate "positive criticism" from "experienced riders" as yourself.
