Aberlour (Scottish Gaelic: Obar Lobhair), is the name of a town in Moray, Scotland, 12 miles (20 km) south of Elgin on the road to Grantown. A burn (stream), the Lour burn is a tributary of the River Spey, and the surrounding parish, are both named Aberlour, but the name is most commonly used in reference to the village which straddles the stream and flanks the Spey – although the full name of the village is Charlestown of Aberlour.

Steeped in centuries of legend and surrounded by the dramatic Highland scenery of Ben Rinnes, the village of Aberlour lies at the very heart of Speyside, where the Lour burn joins the River Spey. The exceptionally pure, soft spring water used for making Aberlour whisky is drawn from nearby natural Springs. In this special place, the resources of nature and the founder’s passion for making the best single malt combine to make the generously multi-layered whiskies of Aberlour.
We have seen more than 40 Distilleries but we must say this was the not in our top but more at the bottom. Let we start to tell that the whisky is very good so that’s not the problem. Also the tasting at the end of the tour is good. Wat was not good; we didn’t feel wanted customers. Us was not told what to do or not but more commanded. It was the tone what wasn’t nice. We couldn’t make any pictures inside. This isn’t allowed at more Distilleries but the reason was safety of flammable gases (alcohol). This was a very strange reason because we see open electricity boxes where more change of spark was then all the camera’s together. Beside that there were al kind of electrical things on the desk with not any security for sparks. For example, a little air vent was on a table and this gives much electrical sparks. Again, it was the tone it was told us. During the tour we asked a worker who was sitting at a computer some things what we see, like a temperature on the display. Also this was not appreciated. Sorry but we fled not wanted. We would buy some things in the shop but went away after the tasting, very disappointed. Specially because we had booked the tour some months before and hoped to get something better.

Deep in the Spey Valley, Knockando Woolmill continues an unbroken 200 year old tradition, producing woven fabric on its historic looms. The Visitor Centre, Coffee House and Shop are open Tuesday - Sunday from 10am - 4pm, March to October. For updates and news about the Woolmill see our website and Facebook page.
We visited Knockando Woolmill during the summer, it was like going back in time, some of machinery they use dates from the1870s there are many buildings to visit like The Cottage, Mill House Old Shop and Office, there is a lovely kitchen and cottage garden.
There is a nice cafe with very tempting food, and a nice gift shop, that sells blankets and throws, hats and caps and many other fine products , made from the lovely tartan and tweed fabric, thats produced on site, there is also a film you can watch, about the history of the mill.
The entry is free, its well worth a visit.

Share with us the story of the only malt distillery pioneered by a woman. The malt whisky produced here has a warmth and cleanliness of taste which experts describe as "silky" and is used in some of the award winning Johnnie Walker blends.
Lovely site, interesting tour/ history with Lorraine, great whisky with some fun blind tasting. Highland coos on site!! ;-) Will definitely recommend!

Make a reservation for the distillery tour. We did not, and missed it, but the staff still made us welcome as I partook of its Two-Dram Tasting (BP 8). Since I have toured several Distilleries, I doubt Macallan's would have been much different. (The are constructing new underground facilities which may change this observation.) The tasting was well worth the cost as I was able to choose two single malts from among many offerings, some of which would have been well outside my normal budget. The products were excellent.

A shop that contained a huge range of food, speciality items and of course whisky. Bought a number of items at reasonable prices. Even had Colston Bassett stilton which was a pleasant surprise.

The highlight of our three week tour of Scotland and Ireland was the Bespoke distillery tour. Mark was an outstanding guide. His car/van was extremely comfortable, and very, very clean. He and Karen developed a tour for us that was perfect to fit our needs. One of the highlights of the day was lunch at the Mash Tun and an extensive tasting. We were really able to define our tastes and what we liked at the Mash Tun. It definitely made the distillery tours and tastings much more interesting. Highest recommendations for this tour.
