The Whisky Castle has been selling the finest malt whiskies of Scotland from its premises in the quaint village of Tomintoul for over 100 years. It is located at the gateway to Scotland's Malt Whisky Trail. Tomintoul is the highest village in the Highlands of Scotland and The Whisky Castle is the highest whisky shop in the UK. Your hosts Sam and Scott, along with their team Maureen, Kirstin and Lauren would be delighted to welcome you to sample some of the finest Scottish malts and gins Scotland has to offer. We have over 500 malt whiskies with many being single cask, independently bottled and from small batches. We provide a unique tasting experience from a fantastic selection of products allowing us to match a malt to your palette and budget. Our single malts are personally selected by us with many being non-chill filtered so you are assured of some of the most unique drams from across Scotland including limited and rare collectables. We also stock some whiskies from Distilleries that have closed and also those that have been demolished and lost forever! We also offer lager, beers, wine, champagne, vodka, gin, port, brandy, sherry and many Scottish liqueurs. There is an extensive gift shop and 18 seater café in our Highland Market serving hot food all day. We offer a full range of Scottish gifts, toys, unique jewellery and country clothing to suit all tastes. When you get the chance to visit us you will be given a traditional warm Scottish welcome and if you are looking for something extra special that we don't have in stock we offer a sourcing service and we can have your item shipped direct to your door. All of our products can be bought online. We love reaching out and spreading the word about the fabulous Malt Whiskies of Scotland in their natural state where there is no added caramel for colouring and whiskies have not been chill-filtered for clarity and/or diminished in flavour for consistency.
This is really a review of the Highland market, but I believe its the same business as the adjacent and connected Whisky Castle.
We dropped in for lunch on Sunday afternoon, and were blown away by the service (friendly and professional), the food (lovely thick soup and nice fresh sandwiches) the price (reasonable) and the coffee/cake - fresh and delicious, and served with hot milk without having to ask. On top of that the toilet was SPOTLESS, as was the cafe.
The connected shop is full of interesting quality items, and the Whisky Castle is not to be missed. Can't wait to return - KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK.

Took the children up the red to Carn Daimh. Very clever how the trail winds its way up to the top with out bursting you.
On route to the top one of the forestry contractors was maintaining the verges with a pretty vicious rotating chain machine. The chap operating could not have been more courteous towards us as he powered down his machine as we approached, thumbs up for my 10 yr old boy as we passed.
Great to see that forestry operations can be down safely and with respect with cyclists in the vicinity. The guy in question was a credit to how forestry operations can be safely managed and how cyclists or walkers can still access the environment safely as he operated his machinery. The Forestry Commission should come to Glenlivet and see how it should be done.
Couple of years since we were last here and the benches are a great addition at the top of the mountain.
Trails in great condition. Very clever that riders of any ability can do the red run. 'Chicken runs' on every difficult bit on the trail, sounds such negative terminology but it means that a family of any ability can descend a great trail and everyone has had fun. Glenlivet have nailed it for a family day out. Top marks to all those who maintain and thought up the trail.

Guided single day walks and multiday wild-camp treks in the Cairngorms National Park, Scotland. Enjoy exploring the landscape and wildlife of one of the last UK wildernesses with an expert guide with over 20 years experience. Photography and navigation tuition is also available.
Just completed 3 days of trekking and wild camping in the Cairngorms with Simon and Cairngorm treks. It was a great adventure (despite the usual variable Scottish weather!). I really can't fault the experience: Simon was highly professional and organised and the equipment was light weight and first rate. He made a point of always discussing routes and options and nothing was too much trouble. Very highly recommended!

A lovely setting with the river bumbling passed. Nice and clean with no litter. Handy little car park with a short windy path to climb up to the ruin of the castle. Alexander Stewart lived here (also known as the Wolf of Badenoch & famous for burning the Elgin Cathedral to how you see it today). We also didnt know about it but found it here on Trip Advisor. There are so many walks to do in this area so we will return. We only did the 500m circular walk which took in the castle. These ruins always makes us wonder what they would look like in their full glory. We hope you enjoy this castle as much as we did

A wonderful community facility with very welcoming staff and helpers. Lots of interesting exhibits. Set in the heart of a beautiful village square with fantastic views surrounding the village. Plenty of hotels and lots to do in surrounding area. Brilliant.

Great hour of riding, lovely ponies and lovely lady in charge.
We're almost beginners as regards ability, but this was no problem, we were up and away, safely negotiated Tomintoul, roads (not busy at all), fields and woods, saw lots of wildlife including red squirrels. Beautiful place, well worth a visit. Rosie and company were very welcoming and knowledgeable, had equipment including footwear and helmets for all sizes of visitors. Can't think of a single negative thing to say about this lovely afternoon in Tomintoul!

Looking for something a little different? Here at Spindrift, we pride ourselves in offering a unique selection of gifts, books, maps, fine art and jewellery - much of which has a very local flavour. We also carry an extensive range of outdoor wear and accessories - just in case the normally balmy Highland climate turns a little inclement!
Having parked our Landrover outside this shop while we went to the cafe across the street, we thought it only right that we visited the shop after we'd finished lunch - and I'm glad that we did. There is a good mixture of stuff on...MoreMany thanks for your lovely first review, and hope you found a nice wall space at home for your pictures! Do pop in again if you are passing by this way in the future.
Bill and Jane Lannagan opened their Gallery by the Square in Tomintoul in December 2003. The quaint little building was built in the 19th century and has been a cobbler’s shop, restaurant and a woodcarver’s shop. Renovated by Bill, it has a delightful airy Gallery area showing traditional, contemporary and Jane’s batik fine art paintings, glazed tiles and art and crafts of other local artists.
