TV and movies love showing us sharks as fierce, brutal, bloodthirsty. We never see them when they’re placid, relaxed, even playful.
I wasn’t prepared for how beautiful and sleek they are, or how gracefully they move through the water. The way other marine life gives them a wide berth, but by no means panics and flees as we might expect.
Watching sharks in their natural habitat, you start to realise they’re coming to our boat more out of curiosity than anything. How strange it feels to recognise that sharks must have individual personalities, moods, favourite hangouts...
This is an amazing experience, with a friendly, professional crew, and as much time in the water shark-gazing as you could want. They keep the numbers down so you can spend longer in the water, and when you come up there’s hot food and a hot shower waiting for you. I thoroughly recommend this trip!

Bluff Hill

If you visit Bluff and don’t come up the hill to motupohue you’re really missing out. On a clear day the views are amazing. On a stormy day just seeing the weather rolling across the Bluff is breathtaking.
There are a series of good info boards at the top which help visitors underdog flora and fauna and spot important landmarks.
Don’t pass up this place, it doesn’t cost anything to visit!

Stirling Point

Ever since I saw the iconic yellow multi arrow sign on Trip Advisor I had been wondering if I'd get a chance to see this on my return trip to South Island (but never made a note of it).
Well, by pure luck, on my way to the Stewart Island ferry, I was the only one on the bus and since there was a tad bit of time, the driver told me he could take me down to Stirling Point. (At that time, I had forgotten this was the place with the sign and thus, when we arrived, I was VERY pleasantly surprised to find that this WAS in fact the same place I had seen on the website!
As a result, it was a real treat to be able to stop here for just a short bit to take some photos and see this place for real!
There is also a hiking trail along the shoreline, but because of my future boat departure, I did not have time for it.
Still, if you're in the area, try to make the stop to see this cool location!

Signpost

It's an obvious location for a signpost to the rest of the world - but it is. Bit of fun that draws the crowds and the photographers. Great view from Stirling Point with easy walks along the coast. Only a few minutes drive from Bluff, the Signpost is worth the diversion.

Bluff Maritime Museum

Cheap admission to view a very varied collection. While not interested in boats at all, I found the social history and details of the whalers, sealers and mutton birders very interesting. Very noisy children shortened our stay but I am sure you could easily spend over an hour here.

I took my parents who were visiting Invercargill, to this place for a coffee. Never again. We walked in the door to two small dogs having a very loud fight with each other. Talk about unhygienic to start with in a place serving food to customers! I did not order anything but my folks wanted a coffee. We also asked for their coffees to have there and they brought them to us in disposable cups! They did not have decafe - she said they don't have any at the moment - I suspect they don't ever. The service was very bland to say the least, just like the coffee. We left with our disposable cups, drove up the road and after a taste my parents threw them out! Such a shame as Bluff is my favourite place and this place does them no favours - give the cafe a miss.

I have visited this brand new venture recently a few times and each time the staff are just so informative, friendly and helpful. The small museum has been created by locals, who are not just talented but very knowledgeable and informed people. I have even brought a friend from USA here who was just thrilled and you will be too. Heaps to see and learn, about Bluff and the surrounding districts. Will come, again. Looking forward to the new Cafe opening soon!!
