Our whole family loved this place: beautiful Kiutaköngäs rapids between red bedrock walls!
Kiutaköngäs Rapids are easily accessible. You have to walk only one kilometer from the parking place and cafeteria (address Liikasenvaarantie 132) along the marked trail. On the way you will see a wartime action station which was used for monitoring the traffic on the River Oulankajoki. There were no major battles in Oulanka during the Second World War but the region's residents lived in constant fear of partisan attacks.
Kiutaköngäs Rapids are 325 meters long and extremely beautiful. If you still go on walking after these rapids, you find stairs and after that (only 200-300 meters from the rapids) you come to a campfire place. It is a nice place to take a rest. After that you can walk the same route (about one kilometer) back to your car.
There are also several other trails on the area. If you want to walk a bit more than only to Kiutaköngäs Rapids and back, I recommend the Hiiden hurmos circle trail (5 kilometers). On the way you will see Kiutaköngäs Rapids, nice swamps, small lakes, an old barn, a small observation tower and a reindeer fence. This is a very easy route also for the beginners. It is marked with cone signs and the trail is quite flat. However, take at least two hours time so that you have enough time to admire all views.

Tänne pitää vartavasten ajella, mutta kyllä kannatti. Suomen suurpedot, karhujen lisäksi ilves teki muhun vaikutuksen. If you want to see Finnish brown bears, saved by a family after thei mother had died, and thus very friendly still towards their carer, this is the place to visit. I was also impressed with lynx lynx. Please note that bears sleep during the winter

Crystal clear waters, hundreds kilometres of deep snow, cutting leafs, making dry hein, marking the baby reindeers and most of all guest with smile on their face, that how our days are made. Come to be our guest in Kuusamo. Our reindeer and fishing farm offers to YOU reindeer, fishing and nature program services in Kuusamo all year round. You are most welcomed to be our guest and spend experience time with us!
It realy was a winter wonderland with the warmest greating
meeting the reindeers and watching as your personal sleigh was lined with skins and furs, then you were sat in the sleigh and snuggled comfortably with more coverings as the reindeers are harnessed to your sleigh.
The tour we took was a 3Kilometer trip through the winter wonderland Narnia like surroundings around the reindeer farm.
On our return we were welcomed back to a wonderful warm cabin with hot chocolates for all and home cooked biscuits and breads.
The whole trip is something that my family and I will remember with joy, and we will definitely be returning
Thank-you Ruka for making our holiday a Fabulous one

Hannu Hautala (born in 1941) is the most famous Finnish nature photographer. He has lived in Kuusamo since 1979. So Kuusamo is the right place for this exhibition named "In Hannu's Footsteps - The Hannu Hautala Nature Photography Centre".
If the weather is too rainy or too cold, you can come here and see the local nature in photos. They are so gorgeous, magnificent and amazing that this exhibition worth of visiting also during sunny days. I really love those photos. Remember to sit down on the interactive rocking chair.
There are also an indoor playground for children and a cafeteria in the building.
Hannu Hautala's photos would be worth of the rating 5. However, I would like to see still more photos and a bigger exhibition. That's why I give the rating 4.

Julma Ölkky is the biggest canyon lake in Finland. The length of Julma Ölkky is 3 kilometers and the narrowest width is only 10 meters. At that point the rock is 50 meters high and the lake is 50 meters deep. Julma Ölkky formatted 2 billion years ago.
There are boat trips on the lake from mid June to late August. The boat trip takes about 30 minutes (prices in 2015: adults 14 euros, children between 5-12 years 8 euros, children under 5 years free). I definitely recommend this boat trip if you want to see those wonderful rock formations. There are old rock paintings there, too.
There are also a kiosk (a cafeteria), a campfire and two good nature trails (Ölökyn Ähkäsy 10 kilometers, the colorful rocks of Hossa 3.5 kilometers) in the area.

Kuusamon Tropiikki Activity Park is 1400 sq.m. and there is 10 activity points. The points include the specialty of Kuusamo: Parkour area and adventure track, racing track for pedal cars, bounce game, precision football game and adventure structures for both older and younger children. The extensive activity selection makes sure there is lots of fun to do for the whole family.
Depending on your kids' ages and temperaments, you could spend between 1-5 hours here. The ideal age is probably 5-12; those younger than five may need some help with the bigger play structure, and those older than 12 might think they're "too cool" for this place. My kids (ages 2, 7, and 10) occasionally got restless but each time, they got a second wind and tried out something they'd already done in a new way and we ended up staying for four hours.
Water is provided and there are cubbies to store your shoes/socks/belongings. Bathrooms are on the other side of the restaurant. Children older than 10 can go without a parent.
Main activities:
zip lines (2)
sponge pit with slacklines
two play structures (one big, one small)
trampoline
pedal go-kart track
parkour area
football kicking game
climbing walls
video game area
