6 Things to Do in Sussex That You Shouldn't Miss

March 7, 2018 Enedina Augsburger

Sussex (/ˈsʌsɪks/), from the Old English Sūþsēaxe (South Saxons), is a historic county in South East England corresponding roughly in area to the ancient Kingdom of Sussex. It is bounded to the west by Hampshire, north by Surrey, northeast by Kent, south by the English Channel, and divided for many purposes into the ceremonial counties of West Sussex and East Sussex. Brighton and Hove, though part of East Sussex, was made a unitary authority in 1997, and as such, is administered independently of the rest of East Sussex. Brighton and Hove was granted City status in 2000. Until then, Chichester was Sussex's only city.

Sussex Murals

Drive around and watch out for the murals - they are quite numerous and well done. For the size of the town, it has much to offer and the murals add a bit of spice to a clean and old fashioned downtown which appears to be holding its own even during these hard times.

Stopped in for some paddle boarding and ice cream. Friendly staff, breath taking view. Nice thing about paddle boarding on the river is all the cool stuff you see, fish, eagles, ducks, deer. We had a great time even tho we had never paddle boarded before, pretty easy once we started. Will definitely be back to kayak!

The Bluff

Reviewed By Mark F - Sussex, Canada

A great hike for a novice, the bluff (there are actually 3, separated by short distances) is a beautiful way to spend an afternoon or late evening. Find the big blue water tower in Sussex Corner, and the trailhead is just behind it (there are two, take the one nearest the valley). There is a 20 or so minute walk along a rock ridge and through the woods, and then the path opens up into a beautiful panoramic view of Dutch Valley and Poley Mountain. It's one of the nicest (if not THE nicest) view in the Sussex area. Dogs are welcome and frequent the trail but are usually leashed. Not a place for toddlers but older children should do fine, but keep close to an adult just to be safe...there are a few areas that if you trip over the side it's a long way down. The terrain is very uneven but easily passable (roots, rocks, etc) and it's pretty hard to get lost....a straight shot in and out. Best advice is to do late evening when the sun is just setting, the shadows in the valley are beautiful.

This is a great little spot. A good variety of trails, easy to hard. Two chair lifts, plus two ways up the bunny hill. Well laid out. A little bit bigger and steeper than Martock (NS), and certainly more variety in the skiing.
As usual, food in the lodge is way too expensive.
