Thiruvarur (Tamil pronunciation: [θɪrʊvɑːruːr]) also spelt as Tiruvarur is a town and municipality in Tiruvarur district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is the administrative headquarters of Tiruvarur district and Tiruvarur taluk. The town was one of the five traditional capitals of the Chola empire, with one of the emperors of the dynasty, Kulothunga Chola I, having it as his capital. The town is believed to be of significant antiquity and has been ruled, at different times, by the Medieval Cholas, Later Cholas, Later Pandyas, Vijayanagar Empire, Marathas and the British. The town is known for the Thyagaraja temple, and the annual chariot festival held in the month of April. The temple chariot of the Thyagaraja temple, weighing 300 tonnes (660,000 lb) and measuring 90 feet (27 m) tall is the largest temple chariot in Tamil Nadu. Thiruvarur is the birthplace of Tyagaraja, Muthuswami Dikshitar and Syama Sastri, popularly known as the Trinity of Carnatic music of the 18th century CE.

During the recent Car festival of Chithirai month, I had the opportunity to witness and receive the grace of God Thyagarajasamy who came around the four streets bordering the temple in his majestic car which is the largest in the whole world. There were thousands of devotees that poured in from various parts of Tamilnadu. The entire CAR procession by itself is a remarkable and memorable event, on both religious and social relevance. I am attaching the photos and one video of the car ride.

Koothanur, a town situated in the Thiruvarur district of Tamilnadu, is approximately 25kms from Mailaduthurai and 19 kms from Thiruvarur
Koothanur is a small village located near Poonthottam in the heart of the Temple belt of Tamil Nadu. This village is especially famous for the Saraswati Temple and its association with Ottakoothar, the Tamil poet.
According to the history, King Rajaraja Chola donated this temple to Ottakoothar a renowned poet so that he could compose in peace. Hence this town came to be called as Koothanur.
Legend says that Ottakoothar and his grandson Ovathakoothar established this beautiful temple for Goddess Saraswathi.
Goddess Saraswathi, in a penance posture, blesses all Her devotees, as main diety in this temple.This is only temple with Goddess Saraswathi as main diety. With 3 eyed form, one leg folded, ambal bestows all wishes of Her devotees. Another special feature is there is no veena in Her hand in Moolavar (main deity). Veena is associated with Saraswathi, but here it is missing in her hand, an unique pattern of Moolavar (main deity) here.
She is supposed to be seated in white Lotus and she is always attired in white silk vasthram.

The Navrathiri Festival especially the Saraswati Puja is celebrated with much fanfare and pomp.On Vijayadasami, the children folk to this temple to get the blessings for the Vidyarambam. After seeking her blessings by writing on paper/slate/rice grains covered dish, they go on to get admission. With the schools slated for reopening in the first and second week of June, it was heartening to see many kids seated reverently before the Goddess and religiously write alphabets on slates or in notebooks with/without help from their parents.
We also performed pooja with pencil and note books to Goddess Saraswathi, praying for our kids to shine in their studies. Lot of shops in front of the temple sell notebooks, pencil,pen and all, for the benefit of devotees who want to do this type of poojas.

Recently, I have been to Srivanchiyam temple along with my parents & Abi sis (Myladuthurai).
The presiding deity of the temple is Vanchinathan which is a Swoyambhu (Self Manifested) Lingam, along with his consort Mangalambikai. Sandalwood is the Stala Vriksham here and Sandal leaves are used to perform pooja to the Lord.
There is a separate sanctum for Yama dharma Raja and people should worship Yama Dharma Raja before worshiping other deities of the temple. This is a Mukthikshetram where you attain Salvation.
We had a great dharshan at the temple, offered our prayers & felt divine.

A small temple in Koothanur near Mayiladuthurai and Thiruvarur (closer to Poonthottam) dedicated to goddess of learning, Saraswati, this temple is quite popular. The temple is itself not big. It is customary to get the pen kept at the feet of the goddess before writing exams. So you can find lot of shops selling pens in the entrance. Be aware, the cost is quite high and may be fakes. So better carry the pen with you and get it blessed.

Nice place to visit for a day's trip ....Beautiful mangrove forest stretches for miles ...as no restaurants are available better to carry food and surplus drinking water , during mid noon and afternoon heat will be blistering so when hiring a boat ,go for the one with over head canopy.....forest dept has made arrangement like watch-towers and resting sheds in some of the Islands....video camera not allowed....
