While we loved the Dachstein-Salzkammergut experience (30 EUR Panorama ticket including 3 cable cars, Welterbespirale, Dachstein Shark, 5 Fingers), the 5 Fingers platform itself is just OK. The view from the Krippenstein mountain station is fantastic even without the viewing platforms. It was also very crowded at the platforms. You get the same view and fewer people by doing the Heilbron Circular Trail - hike from Krippenstein mountain station to Heilbronner Cross then to Gjaid valley station and take the 3rd cable car back to Krippenstein. 5 stars for the views; 3 stars for the touristy viewing platforms.

This review is for the Dachstein-Salzkammergut region; I will post the review for Hallstatt on the Old Town attraction listing.
Unlike most mountain/cable car tourist attractions in Austria (such as Untersberg in Salzburg and Nordkette in Innsbruck), the Dachstein website was very informative about the attractions and hiking options. We were able to plan ahead and decide which ticket to purchase. There are 5 ticket types so be sure to visit the website beforehand.
We visited Dachstein on a Tuesday in early July. We drove down from Salzburg and arrived around 11am. The parking lot was almost full, and there was a long queue at the ticket office because most people didn't know which ticket to buy. We bought the 30 EUR Panorama ticket, which includes 3 cable car rides, Welterbespirale, Dachstein Shark, and 5 Fingers.
Since the ticket office was the bottleneck, the cable car rides were not crowded. The view from the Krippenstein mountain station (after 2 cable cars) is fantastic, even without going on the viewing platforms. We did the Welterbespirale and 5 Fingers viewing platforms first then looped back to the mountain station to do the Heilbronner Circular Trail, which includes the Dachstein Shark. The 3-hour trail goes from the Krippenstein mountain station to the Heilbronner Cross then to the Gjaid valley station, from which you take the third cable car back to Krippensten. Although the viewing platforms were fairly crowded, there were very few people on the trail. It's an easy trail since it's mostly downhill and the trail condition is good. The view from the trail is amazing - beautiful karst landscape that is partially covered in snow and partially with wildflowers. There are very good signs at every junction. After the hike, we enjoyed a very reasonably priced beer at Krippenstein before descending the mountain. It was our favourite hike in Austria.

This cave is part of the Dachstein Salzkammergut mountain complex. You need to get the first section of the cable car. You then walk about 15 minutes up hill to the Cave. You are not allowed to take pictures inside but people did!! There is steps in the cave but stops to get your breathe back. We had bought tickets to this cave and the ice cave. Whilst it is huge if I was short of time I would miss this out. There is also an app that you can download in your language to get an explanation about the cave. There are no stalagmites it stalagmites apart from the odd small ones. The guide was very good and led the tour in English.

Hello, our names are Heidi and Hubert and we give you informations to explore our beautiful reagion, especially Hallstatt by Bike
There is a trail that stays close to the Lake as it meanders north from the beach at Obertraun.
The trail is an excellent way to see more of the lake, as well as a way to work off some of that Austrian beer ! The trail does get steep in spots, but is wide enough to allow one to walk the bike up or down.
Bike rental prices can be had for full day, or half day - so chose accordingly.
