5 Things to Do in Knin That You Shouldn't Miss

November 21, 2017 Mikaela Didonna

Knin (pronounced [knîːn]) is a city in the Šibenik-Knin County of Croatia, located in the Dalmatian hinterland near the source of the river Krka, an important traffic junction on the rail and road routes between Zagreb and Split. Knin rose to prominence twice in history, as the capital of both the medieval Kingdom of Croatia and, briefly, of the self-proclaimed Republic of Serbian Krajina from 1991 to 1995.

The Knin fortress is one of the greatest Croatian fortification monuments and it is the second largest military fortification in the whole Europe, extremely indented and preserved in all its parts. It is a living monument of culture that includes a museum, exhibition galleries and a restaurant. The fortress is located 345 m above sea level and about 100 m above the Town of Knin, it is 470 m long, and on its highest part it is 110 m wide. The defensive walls are about 2 km long.

Krcic River

Krcic River has been protected since 1964. Together with Krka River, it forms a unique hydrographic system with an abundance of hydrographic and morphological karst formations. Over its length of about 10 km from its spring to Topoljski slap waterfall (where it drains into Krka River), Krcic River stands out with its deep and picturesque canyon. The end of the canyon is marked by a lovely flexure of geological layers from the Triassic and Jurassic eras, and interesting denuded relief forms.

The falls are worth a visit. Don't expect anything pristine though. There's rubbish around including piles of toilet paper from campers. But it's cool, nice to have a water massage and not too far to drive from Mostar. Lunch at the restaurant is also a pretty good deal

Manojlovac waterfall

Reviewed By ErikH1980 - Nijmegen, The Netherlands

This waterfall is the tallest in Krka national park, even though Roski slap is mentioned as such in all the tourist brochures. That is probably the case because reaching Manojlovac Waterfalls is quite the challenge, driving 45 minutes along narrow winding mountain roads. But once you get there, you will be amazed by the great views. The waterfall is part of the national park but can be accessed straight from the road. There is a small parking area and from there a 5-minute walk will take you to a viewpoint. Even though it is part of the Krka park, no tickets are checked. They are checked at nearby Burnum Amphitheatre, but that was a true disappoinment, so I'd suggest going straight to the falls and avoiding the checkpoint anyway.
Apparently the waterfall is dry in summer as all water is then diverted to a power plant in a nearby village. In early May, when we visited, it was still flowing and showing its natural beauty.

Burnum Ruins

The remains of Burnum, an ancient Roman military camp, are located in the settlement of Ivosevci, about 19 km far from the Town of Knin in the direction of Kistanje. This archaeological site consists of two units. Following the road from Knin to Zadar on the left hand side two arches are situated. These are probably constituent parts of the main entrance (porticus principia) to the Roman military camp of Burnum, colloquially referred to as Suplja crkva (Hollow church).

This is a group of interesting sites, but very expensive for what you are able to see. I really don't think it is worth going to see it unless you've already paid the entrance for Krka National Park and have already seen the Waterfalls.
