Grosser Arber

We took the Cable car up and down and did the Rundwanderweg around the summit. There is a reduced fare for families and we paid €31 for a family of 4 (one under 6).
The path is predictably busy with day trippers but offers plenty of opportunity for a little rock climbing and picking of blueberries, raspberries and cranberries - all without going off piste which is strongly discouraged. We had a picknick 'on the rocks' and a beer and wine spritzer after our walk in the hut with a little playground. All in all a great day out.

Situated on a bend on the road toward the sky area on Arber, a Bavarian mountain not far from Bodenmais. Authentic Bavaria and highly popular. Very busy in the summer at the week-ends. Hot and cold menu and local beer. You can rent peddle boats and go around the cold water lake.

Localbahnmuseum

The museum is in the old roundhouse, next to the Grenzbahnhof (the railroad station), which sits astride the border between Bavaria and the Czech Republic. The museum is well worth stopping at to see a lot of old trains in a very interesting building. The station itself is shared by both Germany and the Czech Republic, and up until the Cold War it was a very important station on a very important line (I believe it was the line from Munich to Prague). As I understand it, during the Cold War the station was essentially closed down. (The town of Bayerisch Eisenstein was also pretty dead during the Cold War, but now is quite vibrant.) The Bahnhof is not as important as it used to be, but it now handles a number of regional trains.

Depending on which station you join, the price per person varies between €23 and €34 from Straubing. Feeder trains meet at Bayerisch Eisenstein where the train to Klatovy is boarded. The carriages are old, but add to the trip. The journey takes about an hour, where buses meet the visitors and are taken to a restaurant. The meal price is included. A popular trip, there was an Australian family in our group of 40.
Each group has a German speaking guide, ours was very good and explained in great detail all parts of the trip. Free time was spent visiting churches, the famous Catacombs and walking around the old town square. Naturally a beer or two.
Buses collected the group and we arrived at the local station to board the train back. Very well organised and highly recommended
