Huguangyan Scenic Area

Reviewed By Annejs - Sydney

Looking for something to do whilst accompanying my husband to Zhanjiang on business, Huguangyan Scenic Area was recommended. It is about 3/4 hour drive out of town and an enormous park surrounding a crater lake.
Unlike other crater lakes I have seen, where you stand on the top of the Caldera and look down onto a lake, often of a spectacular colour, this area is almost level. It has some lovely picnic areas and some rather old and somewhat unexpected attractions for children: a ghost train depicting history from prehistoric times to the Ming dynasty, dodgem cars, etc. A prayer tree and Buddhist temple could also be found around the shores of the lake. There is an unusual mix of 'art' some large plaster dragons etc, granite inscribed with Chinese characters and a beautiful bronze statue of a Chinese fisherman.
Signs describing the geological history were in both Chinese and English, as was the information in the small museum.
To circumnavigate the lake on foot, allow a couple of hours, but bicycles can be hired and a small train makes regular circuits. Unlike previous reviewers, I found the park to be clean, but maybe visiting mid-week when fewer people were there made the difference.

Zhanjiang Donghai Island

Reviewed By Monika1958 - Zhuhai, China

Dong Hai Dao is about one hour drive from Zhanjiang. The beach is "endless" and a good place to walk, probably not during the hot summer. I would not recommend to walk without shoes. There is broken glass. We observed fishermen pulling their nets in the water.
In terms of accommodation it does not look to friendly. I was sort of trying to find out if there would be a place to stay for later times. We came in Jan. and things were mostly shut down, but they looked that desolate that I have a hard time imagining there is a good place to stay overnight.
You will find Chinese restaurants, some are more rustic than others. Some of the gift shops were open and it was pleasant that we were not approached and nagged to buy things.

Zhanjiang Seaside Park

When I visited the tide was out, so there was a lot of mud flats near the shore. The water of the sea is not blue but gray. The walkway along the shore is nice with lots of flowers and coconut trees. There is a seawall but no beach.

Cunjin Bridge

Reviewed By Shazamateur - Darwin, Australia

I visited Zhianjiang especially to find the remains of Guangzhouwan, the old French colony in China that was supposed to match Hong Kong and Macau. However, there is no information in Zhanjiang about the colony (at least not in English that I could find) and even the concierge at the Crown Plaza had never heard of any French colonial buildings in Zhanjiang.
So, I made my way to the Cunjin Bridge, which was supposed to mark the border between Guangzhouwan and China. The bridge looked nice enough I suppose but I couldn't help thinking there was probably a cool French colonial building or two just around a corner.

This island is amazing if you want to enjoy the peaceful village life. there are many beautiful homes and even a few village temples to visit. The mangroves are breath-taking, and there are a couple "resorts" that offer a comfortable place to stay.
You will need to take a ferry from the harbor in Xiashan to get there, or you can pay a motor boat driver to take you there.

Naozhou Island

Reviewed By KodoDrummer - Yekaterinburg, Russia

Naozhou Island (In ancient times, it went by the name Mang.), the largest volcanic island in China, Zhanjiang. It is located about 40 kilometers southeast of Zhanjiang City, in Guangdong Province. It covers an area of about 56 square kilometres. It is northwest of the South China Sea and to the east overlooks the Pacific Ocean. About 200,000 to 500,000 years ago, submarine volcanic eruption formed Naozhou Island.
There is a small fishing vessel factory on the island. They maintain the centuries-old traditional craft.
We enjoyed walking on the beach and the morning breeze, and along the black lava/volcanic rock. Sunny mornings on the island are great.
Naozhou lighthouse, with the London lighthouse and the Cape of Good Hope lighthouse, are known as the three major Lighthouses in the world. It is also one of the only two crystal grinding mirror lighthouse in the world. It was built in France in 1899.
The island is a great place to stay for days of eating. very tasty, fresh seafood, and at very inexpensive prices. The island is renowned for its seafood, such as abalone, lobster, crab, and many fishes. During the non-fishing season, the locals dried fish. My photos include two of fish being dried.
Its tourist attractions also include Nayanhai Beach, ideal natural ocean baths, and a farmers market where you can buy fresh seafood, and island-grown fruits, and vegetables.
