Tolmin Gorge

Reviewed By JoEllen Z - Svaty Anton, Slovakia

This is an easy (ish) walk, well marked with remarkably beautiful views, some strikingly vertiginous. Be prepared if you’re afraid of heights. The steep stairway down from the top to the river floor can be frightening, but the trail’s steel cable handrails are sturdily reassuring. Be sure to wear proper shoes (it can be slippery and the trails can be uneven). I found having a sturdy walking stick (not a cane!) also helped. There is a descent and a counter ascent you should also be aware of… For every 800 steps down, there will be 800 steps up! There are two convergent, glacier-fed streams, both a beautiful blue, and two foot Bridges spanning each of the streams. Another foot/vehicle bridge looms 60 metres above the water. We shared the walk with a middle school field trip full of well-behaved young Slovene students. The walk’s star attraction is “Dante’s Cave.” It is said that the Florentine poet of Divine Comedy fame visited his friend here in the area, the local ruler. The poet would make regular trips up to the cave, and it became an inspiration for his description of Hell in The Inferno. There is a nice little bar/restaurant at the end of the walk, serving local fare. The man in the ticket booth at the beginning (and end) of the walk was so very helpful indeed, and happy to impart knowledge about the walk and the history. For two pensioners, the fee was €8.00.

This boat cruise is surely one of the main highlights when you are in the Soča/Isonzo valley in Slovenia. There are no tickets to buy before the scheduled cruise, you just go up in the boat and pay after the cruise. You can also eat a lunch up there during the cruise (on normal costs for this region) as there it is also a kitchen to prepare food (suitable to all, there are also some vegetarian dishes on the menu to order). There are two possible ways of a cruise (one to the Tolmin side and one to the Most na Soči and hydroelectric station Doblar side). If you eat a lunch, you have a free second cruise on the other side (tickets for adults cost 6,5 €, for kids less). For one side a cruise last 1 hour, so for both side it takes around 2 hours. Therefore, make sure to have at least 2,5 or 3 hours time if you want to do both sides.
Cruise is stunning as nature around there is beautiful and captain on the boat Lucija tells nice stories (folk tales of some spots near the river Soča, especially one with Lucija and dragon) and atmosphere is good as people can also be captains for a minute. The River Soča here is peaceful and not as rapid as it is in Bovec and Trenta and in the middle of the ride you can see the confluence of Soča and Idrijca rivers. I cruised on the Most na Soči side and saw some nice train Bridges (from Bohinj line, made around 100 years ago like famous viaducts of nearby Bača pri Modreju and Solkan bridge near Nova Gorica), Most na Soči village from the river side, hydroelectric station Doblar, a little cave and at the beginning also one cavern from the First World War (from Battles of Isonzo). It was surely memorable and this cruise also shows many of the typical characteristics of this region which became famour because of its Metal Camp in Tolmin and also shooting of some Narnia films.
It is also possible for groups to reserve a cruise and make it more thematic, depends of what group you are. For the first time I cruised on this boat around 13 years ago as we made the conclusive trip of the primary school there (and on the other parts of Western Slovenia). It was a wedding of two classmates and both of them had their witnesses to a marriage. As I remember, we all laughed back then very much all the time during that cruise. To conclude, it is surely one of the highlights of the Soča/Isonzo valley region and I recommend this cruise to all of you. Have fun and enjoy there!

A beautiful little church in the hills - built by the Austro - Hungarian forces in the war (1914-18).
The church includes the names of the fallen - not the large range of nationalities and religions.
To get there you either have a long hike - or an interesting drive on a not tarmacked road for 7km - Dont be put off, it is worth it.
Entrance fee 2 Euro
Can be closed on rainy days (you can borrow the key from the Gorges Entrance Kiosk or Tolmin Information Center)

Ranch Pelance

Very close to the Emerald lake of Most na Soci there is a small Ranch Pelance. We can offer you some horse riding trips along the Soca River or help you to reach some wonderful viewpoints by riding along the forest routes. We recommend full-day riding tour ˝Back to the mountain paradise˝ to the village of Vrsno above the river Soca at the foot of Krn where famous poet Simon Gregorcic was born. The beginners can enjoy in the riding arena. On the back of a trained horse tourists can do the tour along Mengore, the outdoor museum of the First World War, or just admire the nature’s colours of the seasons. The youngest riders do grooming before riding for the first time in order to build confidence with the horse. Only afterwards they can take a safe and guided horseback ride.

Ranch Pelance is situated on a superb location under the hills above the Soča river and just a few minutes riding away from the turquoise lake. In its vicinity you can enjoy riding through the woods, on the fields or by the river and the lake. The views on the valley and the Julian Alps towering in the background are simply stunning.
The horses are suitable for all levels of horsemanship expertise.
Nejka, the owner of the ranch, is a very experienced guide and a great host. On top of being a great riding instructor she is also a very knowledgeable guide to the local historical and natural sights.
In a nutshell: a highly recommended experience in one of the most beautiful Valleys in the Alps!

It's a hill with the partly restored ruins of a castle on top and the easiest place to get a view of the valley around Tolmin. Just walk uphill from the church, and you'll find the winding paths leading to the top soon enough. There are a couple of Lookouts, some leftovers from the Great War and then a lovely view.
And lots and lots of locals walking and jogging.
