I had 3 private lessons from Kurt and he was great. He really understands the waves, and can explain things in simple progressive steps to help beginners develop quickly. Through his explanations and a little practice, I was able to stand up.. more practice required though to make this a habit!
Equipment was in good condition, and Kurt was communicative through WhatsApp
In my opinion, private lessons are the way to develop quickest, and best with Kurt - the owner of the business!

Victoria & Alfred Waterfront

The V&A Waterfront is a 123-hectare mixed-use destination, and one of Africa’s most visited cultural and historical hubs. Set on the edge of a natural, historic working harbour with the iconic Table Mountain as its backdrop, it offers local and international visitors a cosmopolitan mix of experiences ranging from leisure, shopping and exclusive entertainment. It also offers prime residential and commercial property. The prime positioning of the V&A Waterfront boasts sweeping views of the ocean, city bowl and mountain peaks. Up to 100 000 people visit every day during peak season. Contributing R259.1 billion in nominal terms to the South African economy over the last twelve years, the V&A Waterfront’s cumulative contribution to the provincial GGP since 2002 was over R227 billion. The property also reported a 19% increase in retail trade sales for 2014, marking four consecutive years of consistent growth since 2011. By end 2014, total visitor numbers to the property had grown to 24 million a year. Although the V&A Waterfront remains South Africa’s favourite attraction for international visitors, they account for only 23% of all visitors. Visits by locals increased to 63%, while 14% of visitors were from upcountry. With 22 official landmarks on-site, it is also part of South Africa’s historical legacy. Jointly owned by Growthpoint Properties Limited and the Government Employees Pension Fund (GEPF), represented by the Public Investment Corporation Limited (PIC), the V&A Waterfront was developed in 1988 by the state-owned transport corporation, Transnet Limited, while official commercial trading commenced in November 1990.

During my stay in Cape Town I had the chance to take 7 lessons with Coastline Kitesurfing.
The great points about this kitesurfing school is that it operates in a rather small, young and convivial environment. In total I have had 4 different instructors and could meet almost everyone in the house where the instructors live. There is also the possibility to chill there after a lesson if you have time and want to meet new people.
Another great advantage of Coastline is the price of all lessons. I wanted to train faster so I took solo lessons and I guess that was really worth it. I could not find cheaper lessons in Cape Town. In only three lessons I could attempt a waterstart. Moreover, the planning of the lessons is interesting, they managed to accommodate my schedule very well.
On the other hand, the size of the school does not offer some advantages of bigger schools. As an example, there is not car offering shuttles when you are practicing your upwind skills. You always have to carry your material to the starting point. There is also no one on the beach constantly to give accurate wind forecasts.
All in all, it was a very nice experience!

I booked a package deal for 6 people. Arrived on time.... 10h40 for an 11h00 start, knowing we'd need to be fitted for wetsuits, etc. All ready by 11h00, only to be made to wait by other participants arriving late. Only started our 'lesson' by about 11h20. In the water.... that was fun but due to the storm the previous week, the beach embankment had changed and there were more dumper type waves than waves that could be used for Surfing and the wind was all wrong. That is not the school's fault and they graciously offered another lesson free of charge when it suited. I thought, "Gosh, this is great service" but when my e-mail attempts to rebook went unanswered......... well, that just left a really bad impression.

While visiting my parents in Cape Town in December I wanted to take some windsurfing lessons to supplement a previous very basic lesson I had taken. I searched the web and found that there were not too many people teaching windsurfing in Cape Town, but I did find Katja Haslinger. I am so glad I found her as I feel like I learned a lot and got my money's worth from her 3 day (2 hours a day) course.
The first we spent 45 minutes on land on a simulator to learn the basics of starting to sail and going a tack. The rest of the first class (1.25 hours) was spent on the water sailing. We had 3 people taking the course this day.
During the second lesson spent we most of the time on the water after learning to steer the board and sail upwind on the simulator. We had 3 people taking the course this day.
The last day she taught me how to jibe on the simulator, but because the wind was too strong I was not able complete a jibe without falling over, but was able to improve my tacking and sailing in heavy wind.
Katja was really flexible with the schedule. You can choose the days you want to sail on, but you might also have to be flexible as the wind conditions might not be right. She teaches out of the Milnerton Aquatics Club, where all the gear is provided (wet-suits, booties, life jackets and the boards/rig).
Overall I really enjoyed the course and highly recommend it to anyone wanting to learn to wind surf.
