Suhl is a city in Thuringia, Germany, located 50 kilometres (31 miles) SW of Erfurt, 110 kilometres (68 miles) NE of Würzburg and 130 kilometres (81 miles) N of Nuremberg. With its 35,000 inhabitants, it is the smallest of the six urban districts within Thuringia. Together with its northern neighbour-town Zella-Mehlis, Suhl forms the largest urban area in the Thuringian Forest with a population of 46,000. The region around Suhl is marked by up to 1,000-meter high mountains, including Thuringia's highest peak, the Großer Beerberg (983 m), approximately 5 kilometres (3 miles) NE of the city centre.

A poor location for a conference with facilities like restauirants that are only open occasionally - to be avoided.

This Aquarium is so famous that I was expecting something spectacular. It's not. The most interesting are the sharks and the rays. Anyway, my 3 years old kid had a lot of fun and this is what it matters...

This will primarily be of interest to gardeners. If you're an alpine or rock gardener, it's of great interest. For everyone else this would be mildly interesting, but probably not worth a special stop.
It's quite easy to access off the autobahn, although the nearest exit is about 10 km from the garden. The secondary roads used to reach it are winding but good. The GPS found this with no problem.
The main focus of this garden is alpine plants, with a central area featuring several hundred different species of alpine plants. These would probably be at their best between the end of May and the beginning of July. I was there mid-June, and many plants were blooming. All plants are labelled. Signs are in German but they also give the botanical name of the plant, and the area of origin (eg. Asia, North America, etc). In addition to the rock garden area, there is an area of rhododendrons/azaleas which were in full bloom in mid-June, and an area given over to describing the flora and fauna of the Thuringian Mountains.
Cost is 3.50 Euros entrance, plus 3 Euros for parking.
There is a small cafe near the entrance with a limited menu but good food and friendly staff.
I'm not sure how many of the staff understand English. This is in a rural part of the former East Germany, so English is not as widespread as in the former West Germany. However, the signage is generally clear, so there should not be any problem for non-German-speaking visitors. The attendant at the parking lot spoke excellent English, however. Within the garden itself, most signs are in German.

My partner has very little experience of what was the old 'East' Germany so was amazed to find this exhibition seemingly in the middle of nowhere. He was amazed at the sort of stuff that had been preserved by people and it was quite an eyeopener. Unfortunately, during our visit, the weather was very poor - cold, wet and windy. The cafe was exceptional with log burning fire and hot coffee.

This excellent museum starts with the geology of the Suhl area and the history of mining and smelting the iron which gets made into weapons. There is a display of a gun making shop and tools. There is an excellent display of historical weapons, generally, and modern weapons made in Suhl. There are sporting weapons, duelling pistols, military weapons, target firearms and an extensive display of compressed air rifles. Unfortunately, the written explanations are all in German but anyone could appreciate the artistry and craftsmanship on display.

Absolut empfehlenswert !

The facilities here are very clean. There is a main pool with 3-4 hot tubs and a very fast water slide. Our group conducted water sports in the main pool for about an hour, and we had a great workout. Afterwards, we had fun on the slide. The end of which is blacked out. We also relaxed in the hot tubs. Overall a great place to get warm, workout, have fun and relax when it is freezing cold outside.

Ok Folks, this is Suhl, a small town in the former GDR and the entrance fee is 6 € so do not expect too much. But for this 6 € you get a nice zoo in a beautiful scenery (forget the way from the parking place) which is a bit oldfashioned but has enough animals to offer to keep you entertained for two hours.
It is al a bit familysized with a lot of animals from northern Europe (do not Forget to buy some foodstuff for the Loris though) and some Information. Again, nothing fancy but cretainly worth a short drive if you happen to be in the area.

Just visited recently the Stadtmuseum. It includes a gun, doll and few household appliances collection. You can walk around in max. 20min. Nothing special or somehow exciting rather boring and antiquated. At least there are no other visitors so you dont have to stay in line... Not worth the entry fees, rather visit one of the beautiful Castles aroud, like in Gotha or Eisenach.
