As the sea was rough on one of the days we visited Salobrena we divided to go to the castle. It is well worth the walk up .the views from the walls are stunning . We were particularly interested in the old Muslim Bath area where it is still possible to see the hypocaust. This was made into a house by the Christian's. The defences were sound and the whole structure is quite amazing. Please note the museum which we hoped to visit to see artefacts is currently closed for site removal.

THE TOUR IN ENGLISH IS AT 1PM, TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY Rum distillery founded in 1963, by Francisco Montero. We offer guided tours through our history of sugar cane and the traditional method of elaboration of our rums. Includes sample of rums.
We enjoyed the tour through the history of the bodega and the explanation of the distillery process, and particularly appreciate that it was offered in English by Carmen, who speaks fluently. We were part of a large tour group and the visit was hastily arranged; for this reason I want to ensure that any negatives should be directed to the tour organiser and not the bodega. Tapas was provided (paid for by the tour company) and though the food was delicious, much was wasted as they took us here straight after breakfast. The rum tastings were generous, though the mix with 7-Up was new to my palate - it tasted only of lemonade. I think Coke would've been better. The premium brand was 'ok' but I feel heavily branded around the bodega's 50th anniversary. I found the taste nothing out of the ordinary, but that's just my palate.

Have always loved the friendly atmosphere and view of the beach from this little bar. Great for a drink and tasty tapa when you come off the beach. But this year the owner has added a wonderful choice of interesting tapas and a list you can choose from, so now it is even better. Definitely my favourite Salobrena beach bar.

After a rather inauspicious entrance room with some written history on boards the museum definitely improves! All the information is in multiple languages including English and both the videos shown have English subtitles. The lady who was on the desk spoke good English and helped explain any questions. The museum was the site of a sugar refinery and the main room shows the remains including a mill and press. Worth the 3€ entrance fee and an hour or so to wander...

If you like different types of flora this is the place for you. A wonderfully maintained garden in the heart of town. Set out in a shady area with a Zen Buddhist theme there are many different types of Bonsai to see. In one area you can see men tending to the plants and watch them pruning, dead heading and shaping them with wires.
It is very peaceful with subdued piped music and cost only €2 or €1 for seniors. A previous reviewer made a comment on the animals kept there, we saw no caged animals, there was a very healthy looking dog sleeping in the shade and a couple of puppies in a storeroom area, neither seemed distressed or in discomfort.

We were waiting for our bus to return to the cruise ship. Since the stop was at the base of the hill of this beautiful church, we hiked (it is a steep paved path) to the top to see the church. Just as we arrive a gentleman opened the doors to allow visitors in the afternoon. The church has a very scenic look with it perched atop a hill. Entering the church it seems rather plain until you get to the altar. It is magnificent with a beautiful gilded altar. In fact they allowed us to go behind the altar to see the majestic altar piece and Mary with the baby Jesus. The dome ceiling was also an elaborately decorated. We were so glad we stopped in to see this amazing church. It is beautiful and most spiritual place. This was actually a highlight of our visit to Motril. So glad we stopped in and timed it when it was open. There is also a park area around the church with various statues. We did not get to see these as the bus was coming.

Stunnng views to see both sides of the coast, once you've climed the steps. Well worth the climb up. Also nice at night when lit up.
