The underground tunnels built,or perhaps I should say dug,on various levels underneath this town are more extensive than the town itself. Originally created as cellars for storage for wine, there are even rails for moving large containers around. My only suggestion would be to take some kind of jacket even in the summer because after a rather long underground tour it can get pretty chilly.

Only to be visited via a guidetour, duration 30 to 50 minutes. This painted cellar in sandstone rock is excavated in sandstone slope is 100 meters long and arched 11 metres high. This cellar has never been a repository of wine, but rather a private wine room where in a temperature of 10-11° throughout the year various types of wine ripen. In the basement are dozens of different motifs in the period 1934-1968 were cut out in the sandstone and painted in the naive art style by Maxmillian Appeltauer: all kinds of stories with goblins, mermaids and other characters, alpine landscapes, lewd scenes and socialist themes. This popular artist painted landscapes, portraits, coats of arms and women. After an accident in WW II he painted with only one hand. He completed his paintings and themes in 1972 and died in that same year.

It was a great night. I lost many money... But it was funny. Alkohol was free. Only 20€ for entrance and you became 20€ for game.

Even though the Rotunda doesn't look like anything special from the outside, it's definitely worth the fee and the waiting time. The 15 min. or so one is allowed to stay is simply hard to describe in words. It justifies the trip to Znojmo, which otherwise is a quiet, average border town.

Retz is one of those very old towns that tourists does not explore properly. From the church there is a route up towards the hill where the windmill is standing. This is the cruxifiction route with real statues. The buildings and vineyards is also very spectacular.

We only had time to venture a little bit into the national park during our Znojmo visit, but we already want to go back there. There are lots of hiking options, great views from the hilltops, and calming nature all around. Simply great.
