Old Rauma is extremely picturesque. It is full of wooden houses, narrow streets with cobblestone surfaces and charming cafeterias or restaurants.
Remember to visit at least Old Town Hall Museum, Shipowner's Home Museum Marela, Seaman's Home Museum Kirsti, Rauma Art Museum and Ruins of the Church of the Holy Trinity.
I think that Old Rauma and Kylmapihlaja Lighthouse Island are the most important sights in Rauma. Our family really loved walking in Old Rauma.

This church is certainly one of the more monumental historical buildings in Rauma, a town better known for its quaint timber architecture. It is set across a beautiful little stream from the rest of the Old Town, the banks of which are covered with ferns and wildflowers in Summer. The churchyard is filled with luxuriant green grass. I suppose it must have a very different feel in the dead of Winter. Apart from that, it has a thick belfry and attractive stonework. We found it pleasant, but a short visit will probably suffice for most visitors.

This a beautiful small museum: the rooms and Exhibitions are beautiful and captivating. The museum is not trying cover it all, but it certainly gives fascinating glimpses to history Rauma seafaring and seafarers in a nice way. We really enjoyed seeing this cosy and interesting museum!

The rooms of this house museum are full of period furniture and other decorations, giving a clear picture of the life of the wealthy of the late 1900s. Special features: decorative tile stoves, period costumes. During our visit was a special exhibition of regional folk hats from all over Europe.

this late 18th century former town hall lies in the edge of the World Heritage town of Old Rauma( which despite being listed as a world heritage site is well worth a visit!). It is beautifully preserved building with a series of local displays including lacemaking- and other socual history material- when I visited there was an excellent up to date archaeology display about new discoveries of sites just outside the town- which I thought were excellent!

Rauma Water Tower offers a spectacular view over the centre of the town and all the way to the sea.
For anyone wanting to get a handle on Rauma City and its environs, we recommend walking over to this former water tower, which has now been converted into an observation tower. At 65 metres high, it commands views far across the flat terrain around Rauma, all the way to the Bothian Gulf and deep into the pine forest. You can also see the paper mill which so important to the local economy and the spires of the main churches.
As long as you buy something from the cafe on the top, you can enjoy the views for free. Filtered coffee or soft drinks costs around 2 euros apiece.

Kylmäpihlaja Lighthouse Island is achievable by boat from Poroholma Resort & Camping. The voyage from there to Kuuskajaskari and then to Kylmäpihlaja takes about 50 minutes. You get tickets from a ticket booth. They are not sold on the boat. It is also possible to make a reservation online but you must retrieve tickets from the booth.
Kylmäpihlaja Island (9 hectares) is situated on the border of the open sea, nine kilometers westward from Rauma. The island is full of nature and it belongs to Selkämeri National Park. A common sea buckthorn is a typical plant there. Terns and barnacle geese are common animals. You see them everywhere. There are also some snakes there but you don't have to worry about them if you are not going to walk on boulder soil with separate rocks. The solid rock is a safe place.
I loved those solid rocks or cliffs. They are wonderful places to sit down, relax and listen to the sounds of nature, namely waves and terns. If you are there in the evening, you will also see a wonderful sunset provided that the weather is good.
There are a small visitor center, a summer cafeteria and a free campfire site on the island. The most prominent building is the lighthouse which was built in 1953. There are toilets (water closets), a free observation deck, a good restaurant and a hotel in the lighthouse building.
Enjoy the delicious archipelago buffet (in the summer 2017 daily 11 am - 3 pm) in the restaurant or order something from the á la carte menu (open until 9 pm). I ate harbor master's beef made of Angus beef fillet and it was very delicious.
You see the island in 1-2 hours but I recommend that you stay overnight in Kylmapihlaja Lighthouse (read separate TripAdvisor reviews about that hotel or B&B). Just so you can admire the sunset and sunrise, too. Colors are marvelous on the island!
It is hard to decide if Old Rauma with wooden houses or Kylmäpihlaja Lighthouse Island is the most important sight in Rauma. I recommend that you visit both of them.

The island is a very interesting mixture of abandoned army buildings and beautiful nature. Half of the island is included in the national park; the other half is spotted by army barracks. You can see heavy cannons, of which one is still functioning, climb watch towers and see how the nature slowly takes rule over the shooting fields etc. There is a guided path around the island and it's worth taking, if you're interested in nature. The view to the sea is amazing and you can easily find private sun bathing or book Reading places.
You can stay in the previous army barracks in a cheap hostel dormy style or in a row house were the army officers used to live. We took the row house apartment and found it quite expensive compared to the quality. You had to clean it up yourself or pay 50 euros extra and no breakfast was included.
There is a cafe / bistro on the island with good pizza.
You can reach the island by a ferry or a boat of your own. The ferry starts from Poroholma, a couple of kilometres from the Rauma centre. It's recommendable to make a reservation for the ferry.
We visited Kylmäpihlaja light house on the same trip and really recommend that too.

The buildings and yard of the Kirsti Museum are representative of construction in the 18th century and in the early 19th century. The place was owned by the same family for 200 years and gives you a glimpse on the lifestyles of house owners.
The museum is only open during SUMMER.
The 8€ ticket (or free with the Museum Card) is a ticket-bundle of 3 museum of Rauma (Marela + Old Town House + Kirsti).
