Pirna (Upper Sorbian: Pěrno) is a town in the Free State of Saxony, Germany, capital of the administrative district Sächsische Schweiz-Osterzgebirge. The town's population is over 37,000. Pirna is located near Dresden and is an important district town as well as a Große Kreisstadt. It is also known for the gassing of about 15,000 disabled people in Sonnenstein Castle between June 1940 and August 1941, killings which ceased after pressure was exerted on the authorities by the local population. Today, a small plaque at the base of Sonnenstein Castle and the Sonnenstein Memorial remembers the dead.

As I lived in the eastern part of Europe until 2001, this visit was a confirmation that life in the DDR was very similar to Romania. Luckily we speak German so we could understand all commentaries and explanations. It is a good thing for the younger generation to go visit.

It is only a short walk from the attractive Am Markt to this great church. It gloriously dominates Kirchplatz. We walked up the steps leading to Schloss Sonnenstein. This gives great views over Pirna and particularly the red-roofed Marienkirche with its eye-like features.
The church interior is wonderful. The net-vault ceiling is awe-inspiring. The high and immensely decorative altar is delightful. Other notable features are the baptismal font and the high placed organ.

The temptation of a special experience - a bicycle ride along the Elbe. The Elbe cycle path is one of the most attractive and varied cycling routes in Europe. The region between the North Sea, Saxon Switzerland and Bohemia is distinguished by multifaceted landscapes, exciting history and a unique cultural heritage.

For all those who love nature and history, spectacular views and are ready to do some climbing...It worth it! The way up will make you a bit tired, but don't hesitate. If you are into sports ('coz I am not) it will be a piece of cake for you! SO, who will get the top first???

We are very interested in the history of the places we visit so we wished to see this sobering memorial. It is located in the lovely town of Pirna, in the former fortress area.
The museum is located in the basement of the building where the original atrocities were carried out. We found the memorial and exhibits very moving giving a detailed and graphic account of the incomprehensible horrors that took place here.
There are photographs and a little biography of some of the victims. Touchingly there is a collection of the personal possessions, including a comb and mouth organ. On some of the paving stones in front of the building a cross has been painted in different colours.

We were in summer in Geibeltbad. Outside pools were open. The inside pools include special pool for child-there are also some toys, sport pool, pool with a warm water, outside pool with a warm water. The sauna is perfect too(there are some saunas with aufgusse, three pools-warm and cold), salt sauna, etc. Outside pools in the park are not heated, but it is ok in the summer, the water temperature is approximately 22-23'. There is also playground for children, place for volleyball.
