Represa Hidroelectrica Itaipu Binacional

Largest In The World

Reviewed By Rick F - Province of Buenos Aires, Argentina

We did the technical tour of Itaipu which takes you down to the foundation of the dam and into the main powerhouse. The size of the place is mind-boggling with the powerhouse over a kilometre long and twenty enormouse turbo-generators. The form of construction of the dam leaves Cathedral like spaces bewteen the buttresses that are over 100m high.
A very impressive piece of engineering and though Three Gorges in China is larger, Itapu holds the record for the amount if energy generated in one year.
We did not see the spillway in operation which must be incredible to see.

We took a local bus from Encarnacion bus station to Trinidad (10,000 Gs). Look for the bus that goes to Bella Vista and ask to be dropped off near the ruins.
They drop you off at the main road from which it is a straight 7 min walk to the ruins.
Entrance costs 25,000 Gs per person and includes entrance to three of the sites around this part of Paraguay. There is also a short film to be watched beforehand.
The site itself is very impressive and extremely well kept.
We spent about one hour walking around and enjoying the architecture and nature.
Even seen a pair of amazing owls
Highly recommend

Paseo La Galeria

That this is voted the #1 thing to do and see in Asuncion by TripAdvisor travellers should be enough to guide you away from Paraguay's capital. It's a shopping centre. It isn't even a very good one. There are two reasons to visit at all and one is air conditioning and the other is free wifi. That's it. There's a Pizza Hut, a Burger King and some very non-descript clothes shops, plus lots of outlets selling mobile phones. There is virtually nothing to do in Asuncion for tourists, so I can see how desperate travellers are to review something, but good grief.

Although this shopping center is huge, it has a limited variety of brands.
Most of the goods are indeed made in China, and therefor the quality may be doubtful.
Except for the special offers, It is also not that cheap.
Nice to have seen, but not a ``must have been`` item.

From CDE is really very easy to get to the falls. It might not be as spectacular as the Yguazu Falls, but it does has its charm and beauty. Nice cafeteria and pleasant short trails. If you can, combine this visit with a trip to Monument Moises Bertoni.

This site is included with your ticket to Trinidad and Jesus de Tavarangue, but it is quite a way away--several hours drive. Having said that I HIGHLY recommend an overnight in San Cosme y San Damien. It is a charming town. The visit to this Mission is terrific (be sure to take the free included tour) and your admission also includes the Observatory and Planetarium (including a night star observation). While you are in San Cosme y San Damien consider an excursion to the San Dunes.

Iglesia San Buenaventura de Yaguaron

Reviewed By Alfvear - Asuncion, Paraguay

Located approximately an hour from Asuncion by car. The town was founded by the Franciscans in the XVI century. The church from the outside is very simple, but beautiful. The inside is just amazing. Baroque figures everywhere and a peaceful atmosphere. It is the most striking church in Paraguay by far. Also in Yaguaron, you can visit the house of Gaspar Rodriguez de Francia, the first dictator of Paraguay, who at least preserved Paraguay´s independence from Argentina and Brazil´s ambitions. You can also climb the Santo Tomas hill, just few blocks from the church. There is a small chapel and the view from the top is really nice. You can also combine this visit with a trip to nearby Paraguari, Piribebuy and the lovely Chololo park.

Ruinas jesuiticas de Jesus de Tavarangue

Reviewed By juanofthejungle - Culburra Beach, Australia

This is one of a number of Jesuit Missions in this part of South America. The 3 Missions I visited in Paraguay (2) and Argentina (1) were all slightly different and it was good to contrast them. Construction here started in 1685 and continued until the Jesuits were expelled in 1767. The last Abbot had an inscription made on a pillar before he left. The surrounding farmlands were quite lush and scenic when I visited. Being a bit off the beaten track there were not many visitors.
