I love watching water shows in other countries. The walrus show was cute. There was a little boy who was too shy to play peek-a-boo with the walrus trio. His mom did it and all 3 fell backwards in shock. I have the best photos of jumping dolphins ever. I stood at the rail of the top observation deck. I did like that aquarium employees supplied plastic to people in the front row and pink towels to people who got splashed.
I also really liked the sunfish. You don't see those a lot. Kinda freaky.

What a lovely experience! The natural 'zoo' is situated mountainside, with caretakers who provide food for the two troops of wild monkeys that live in the area. This acts as a natural deterrent between local wildlife and local residents & businesses, who would otherwise find the animals to be a nuisance due to scavenging behaviors.
A tram is available to take visitors up that offers a nice view of the wild life and the water. However, it's no faster than walking up the trail, and most likely takes longer when you considering the wait time.
The park rangers and staff are very vigilant about keeping visitors safe, and stress the importance of not bringing food and the correct way to behave around the animals. This isn't a trained animal theater: the monkeys are wild, and while they tolerate human presence, they aren't interested in interacting with you....nor should they be, for the protection of all.
Overall, this is a really nice way to safely spend time in close proximity to these creatures and a wonderful experience for children to observe the monkeys in a natural habitat and learn that animals need not be restricted to zoos.

I was there when it was newly opened, could see that it was a huge shopping center with shops and restaurants at the Oita JR Station.

Really interesting and fun collection of contemporary art, and some fun featured artist Exhibitions throughout. It's the kind of museum you just want to hang out in! The building is gorgeous too!

I had a bad experience here. The water is so dirty that I could found trash anywhere on the water. Also, my skin and my eyes got irritated after swimming. The shower room is not that clean, yet a bit smelly. Not very convenient if you travel by bus, because it only passes about once or twice in one hour. There's no train station nearby too.
If you only came to Oita or Beppu for few days, I recommend you to visit other tourist spot rather than making this as your priority.

I was walking around Oita city center and saw this beautiful building on the main street and found out it is a bank. I did not go in but took photos of it from the outside.

Oita Art Museum is designed to preserve the wonderful natural environment of the Uenogaoka Park under the basic ideas of "a museum which is opened for everyone","a museum that co-exists with the environment" and "a museum which has a variety of space". It is the open structure which is possible to come and go from a walk in the park, and the earth colored building harmonizes with the nature of the Ueno-no-mori. The Entrance Hall is full of Sunshine. We can command a whole view of the central city from the observation Terrace, the restaurant and the bridge, and feel much of nature in the Ueno-no-mari in every season. We can always appreciate art collection in the Permanent Exhibition Gallery and from time to time special Exhibitions will be held in the Special Exhibition Galery. It is not only art appreciation but also a multi-faceted museum.
First time to visit this museum after several trips and I enjoyed seeing the varied and interesting exhibits. The view from the museum is also a treat. I recommend this museum to foreign visitors.

This place is just a few minutes away from our neighborhood. A Japanese Shinto Shrine in Oita. I invite my friends every year in the Spring to see the Wisreria (Fuji) flowers in Sasamuta Shrine. During this season people pay a visit to the shrine and to enjoy the view and the sweet smell of the flowers. The old bridge across the creek is unique. We enjoy strolling around the shrine and taking lots of photos of the beautiful Wisteria flowers.

Because I actually passed it twice by rental car while passing through Oita down the coastline. It is small, but it has a neat eatery where you sit at a counter next to a window and have a wonderful view of the ocean. The restaurant has quite a wide variety of seafood dons (raw seafood on rice). The area is known for maguro or white-fleshed fish marinated in shoyu sauce and layered over rice. Unfortunately, both times I was still full from buffet breakfast at my hotels so I didn't order anything. So bring a big appetite if you expect to visit this road station. It is located about 17 km from Oita City as you head towards the cape that juts out into the ocean before the coast turns south towards Saiki and Miyazaki much further down. You need to follow the coastline. The first time I bought some pankyo fried fish fillets which I ate later and they were delicious. There is a small fruit and vegetable market inside the gift shop which sells local delicacies.
