The shrines and temples of Nikko have been recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Here, you can visit the Toshogu Shrine, which dates from the 17th century and is a monument to (and the mausoleum of) Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of a shogunate that ruled Japan for 250 years. Travelers day-tripping from Tokyo generally focus on the sacred sites, but if you have extra time, explore the area’s beautiful waterfalls and lakes.

My wife and I visited this place as part of our 2 weeks holiday in Japan. It was very crowded as it is a very popular tourist attraction and Japan is currently experiencing a tourism boom. They should consider raising the entry prices to try to reduce the number of visitors and raise more income.

Found this amazing place just a short hike down the river from our hotel. The staff here is wonderful in attempting to share the history and often meaning of the beautiful home's many features...where it's important where some windows face and why. We speak only a little Japanese but found this stop a rewarding visit. The grounds are spectacular...especially when framed by the windows from inside the villa.

The unesco world heritage area of Nikko including the various shrines are well worth a day trip from Tokyo. Nikko is reachable by the Tobu line from Asakusa tobu station with a 2-2.5hr journey.
The shrine is reachable by buses outside the Nikko tobu station, short journey.
Entrance fee to the site including the Cat, and 3 monkeys is 1300jpy. The lady manning the entrance ticket sales is quite rude in fact as I enquired if discounted tickets were available for daytrip passes she brusquely said NO very loudly before shutting the window rudely and proceeded to another window to serve Japanese visitors.
Otherwise the inner yard and the old structure is very well preserved however the restored areas look too shiney and plasticky. On a beautiful day this shrine is quite impressive as one can see the carvings and paintings quite clearly.

We drove for about 15 minutes from Nikko Central to get to the gorge. Road signs are helpless or almost invisible. In-car GPS was not helping either. We finally get the direction by matching the chinese characters of the Japanese language, driving through narrow roads of residential area to the gorge. It was perfect weather when we were there, clear sky and cool breeze. We would just describe it as a "photo stop".

Yutaki falls is an unusual waterfall in that it's more a series of extremely steep rapids, rather than a true "fall".
Regardless of whether you attempt to see this from the top or the bottom, you will need to walk a little.
If you feel energetic, I suggest taking the bus to the top of the falls and walking down to the bottom (approx 10 minutes of stairs).
If you are more energetic, get off the bus at the bottom of the falls and walk up.
Either way, you will get a chance to bathe in a spot where negative ions abound!
If you only want to see 1 waterfall in Nikko, I think this should be the one.

Amusement park recreating ancient Japan.
At first, I hesitated because it is far from Tokyo, but my husband insist because he wants to see Ninja Show.
But turns out this themepark is so good!
Started from beautiful mountain views ( i go in autumn ), wearing traditional costume, amazing photoshoot places, lots of infos about japanese tradition ( shinsegumi especially ), shamisen lesson, good tempura restaurant, good coffee ( overnight drip ), AMAZING NINJA SHOW.
All employees are nice.
My husband wear a dono-sama costume and they bow down to earth when they see him.
They even hve baby room, that has toys and stuffs.
Such an amazing experience.
PS : dont forget to buy the geisha baumkuchen. So good!

This lake is the end of walking trail and terminal of local bus from Nikko Station. Comparing with Chuzenji-ko lake, this lake is small but I recommend to see because the place is so quiet. The place is the source of hot spring. There are hotels along the lake. You can walk round the lake. If you get tired, you can stop walking and use a bus. The bus stop is in front of hotels.

Kegon Falls in winter season would get partially frozen which makes the scenery very special and powerful.
Slightly blue coloured water makes beautiful ice.
You can forget time just staring at the water flows from the top to bottom and into the stream.
Although some souvenir shops are closed during winter season, this is worth visiting during winter time (as well as other very beautiful Seasons).

you can see many color of plants here with mountain as background. I cannot describe this view well, better you see it by yourself :). one most important things is use your sneakers here, not you flat shoes or heels. Do not forget to bring you camera to catch the scenery of wide blue color sky and various plants merge in harmony
