This was a highly entertaining, educational and enlightening two-hour tour spent listening to Alan Rackham’s stories about the Riversleigh fossils, the history and development of the Riversleigh fields and seeing first-hand how they are processed in the laboratory.
Alan may be an amateur enthusiast, but what he doesn’t know about the Riversleigh fields and its fossils is probably not worth knowing. As an explosive’s expert, given his mining background, it was fascinating to hear about his contribution to uncovering and recovering the world-renowned Riversleigh fossils.
Remarkable were the miniature exhibits we looked at through microscopes, a complete juxtaposition to the diprotodon and ‘big bird’ fossils seen in situ in the limestone rocks in the general display area.
For anyone going on to Riversleigh after visiting Mount Isa this is a highly recommended introduction. It certainly puts into perspective what you see at the only accessible fossil site, D site, in the Boodjamulla National Park.
Alan tells the story of drilling to set explosives and the drilling rod getting stuck, and there it is at the top of D site embedded in the rock.
This was an undoubted highlight of our stay in Mount Isa. For a packed two hours, full of interesting information and exhibits, this is well worth the relatively small entry fee.

Great spot out of Mt Isa, visited while travelling through. Very large volume of water set with family parkland surrounds, great spot for family picnics and gatherings. Beautiful birdlife, clean ammenities, very relaxing for short stop or half to whole day activity and relaxation. A product of the local mines for the town people.

The Hard Times Mine tour gives you the history and background on how mining was originally done. You have the opportunity to use some of the equipment and they have a working mine truck down there which is demonstrated. The guide was very knowledgable and spoke from firt hand experience having worked down the mines in years gone by. You are provided with all the safety gear and even though you work quite far the time goes very quickly. Morning tea down there is a treat ... we have tea/coffee, corned beef and pickle sandwiches and pasties. Overall an excellent tour which was definitely value for money.

We were in Mount Isa for 5 nights (not consecutive nights) and ate all our evening meals at The Buffs Club. The menu is extensive and the meals were excellent. The Club provides a free courtesy bus. All staff are friendly and obliging. It is worthwhile joining the club for $2 per person, as members receive discounts on meals, drinks etc. We also visited the coffee shop, which provides light meals and snacks.

We drove in with caravans trailing behind. Shocking road. Couldn't find the open cut mine as illustrated on the photo. There were caravans free camping. The only thing left there is lots of concrete slabs and a memorial. Very disappointed.

Telstra Hill is not signposted and for the first timer can be a little hard to find. It's about 2km out of Mount Isa as you are heading to Cloncurry. Simply look for the big telephone tower on the hill and the driveway going up.
Whether you walk up or drive up, the views are spectacular and a trip to Mount Isa would not be complete without a visit to take in the truly amazing landscape.

Everyone loves a good sunset, but even more so when it is accompanied by a drink and lovely nibblies and some gorgeous outback landscape. The lake was a fantastic backdrop for this tour. Michelle was our tour guide, and she was awesome - lots of stories and information as well as the beautiful scenery.
