Already with some look and feel from Disney, however we still felt comfortable there. Not to crowded yet. But this will change with improved roads and railway connections. The atmosphere is good and friendly (and expensive). The show at night is professional (including english subtitles) and entertaining.

Definitely go here! Check out my review for this place on the Zhaoxing VIP review site. TangAn has rice terraces that are definitely comparable to those at LongJi, but they just don't have the official UNESCO heritage site listing. Gorgeous small Wind and Rain bridge that also compares well to the better known one at ChengYang.

We visited the beautifully restored downtown area during a cold snap in January. The facilities are not heated so dress accordingly. Great history of the Long March.

When I went here the village was partially under construction, particularly near the front, which is being extended with a brand-new drum tower and additional housing. According to some locals we talked to, it's expected to be largely completed in about a year. The extension seems to be mostly because the locals need more new housing, though tourism definitely plays a role. At the moment, however, Xiaohuang is largely tourist free, and as you wander through you may very well find yourself the only ones not actually living there. As such it's a fascinating look into village Dong life.
Xiaohuang lies at the end of a road along which are two other Dong villages: Gaozeng and Baba. Make sure to stop off at both for a broad feel of the regional changes. Gaozeng is probably the ugliest of the three. Modernized for the convenience of the locals, it's half concrete monstrosity, half rundown yet picturesque shacks. Pretty wind and rain Bridges and drum towers are still there, but rubble is presently strewn along most streets. Baba, on the other hand, is the most beautiful and smallest of the three. Here, there's no sign of construction and all the houses maintain their quaint appeal. At all three villages, locals don't actively try to hawk their wares, though most will be willing to sell if you ask politely - though you may get some bemused looks.
A note on transport: car is the only option. Most drivers ask initially for RMB200 to take you to Xiaohuang from Congjiang bus station and back right off the bat, but it's worth trying to bargain. At the very least you should make sure that if you do pay RMB200, the price includes a trip to Xiaohuang (complete with stops at Baba and Gaozeng) as well as a trip to Basha (also known as Biasha), a Miao village that is known for being the refuge of the last gun-hunter tribe which is 15 minutes outside of Congjiang. Basha is more touristy (complete with entry fee and staged performance) but also very pretty, so worth including on the itinerary.
On accommodation: Congjiang has basic hotels, but you can also stay in certain houses in Xiaohuang and Basha - just ask a local or your driver which ones. These places are similar to hostels, but are also likely to be the home of one of the village residents.

I like the original lifestyle and well kept traditions of the Dong people. But the trash thrown around the village is not a good scene. Let us all tell the village elders about this and try to keep the village clean.

The Dong people in Dimen know how to live in harmony with nature, and would not allow the $ thirsty business people to come in and break their peace. Finger crossed this could continue for ages.

The area has many such Bridges some of which are really excellent although many have markets along them now selling poor quality goods and making it all a bit touristy rather than about the culture and history but that is inevitably the case I suppose as tourism grows. Many such Bridges have been restored and this is an excellent example of the shelter thus provided for the rural community
