Even though the renovation on the building that had been nicknamed the "Hotel California" by soldiers wasn't completed yet, it was very interesting seeing the various military vehicles and planes. Seeing the weapons of war up close and personal...even some destroyed...did add an additional element to the understanding of what happened in this country during the Homeland War. Photos and videos and stories from survivors hadn't given me the complete picture as being so close to these tanks, etc. and letting my imagination run wild finally did. Could not determine when the museum (in that building) will be open.

Situated in the woods just outside Karlovac, this well maintained castle and its surroundings make great one-hour (or so) trip. Entrance fee is 10 kn, which includes the exhibits and access to the tower with splendid 360 view. There are several paths around the castle, some of which take you to the near-by church (5 mins walk) and further on to town (30 mins walk). Dont expect too much from the exhibits, but the view is great!

Freshwater aquarium Aquatika presents the flora and fauna of Croatian rivers and lakes, geological history, traditional culture and history of the basin of four Karlovac rivers.Visitors can witness richness of life in rivers and lakes, and more than one hundred Freshwater fish species, of which 40 are endemic. This is an EU project financed from European Development Fund.
Visited this aquarium with my nephew. I really enjoyed it. He visited this place in the past, but still loves it. Karlovac is a city very much famous for its rivers so this was a very much needed edition to it. It's very informative. I would visit again. Staff were very pleasant and helpful.

The Gardens and surrounding views are absolutely stunning. The castle is a short drive from Karlovac town. The restoration of the castle continues with the museum inside a newly restored building. The museum tells of the history of the area and contains prehistoric, old Roman and medieval archeological finds. The museum entrance is 20 kuna which is about 5 Australian dollars.

The museum captures a lot of history about the city itself and prominent people of different eras. It is interesting, but sadly, the content is in Croatian. Maybe that should be revised. Also, note that is closed on mondays.

In a city that is full of beautiful nature, this is one of the nicest parts. Definitely recommended for a nice stroll around.

The award winning Foginovo beach and recreational area on the River Korana has facilities for activities such as beach volleyball, table tennis, basketball, an outdoor gym & running track as well as the bathing area with it's 7m diving board, water polo and facilities for younger kids who want to get in on the fun.
There is not much to the town itself, but this swimming area is really nice. There are restaurants and coffee shops. We have come to the area to go rafting in the Mreznica river, unfortunately the water level in June was too low. We still went kayaking and it is a great river.

Zvijezda (The Star) is the oldest part of Karlovac, built in the 16th century. Karlovac was a fortified town built to take part in the defense against the Turks that were invading Europe at the time. Its ground plan was laid out in the form of a six-pointed star set within defensive walls and ditches filled with water. In each of the six corners there was a strong bastion. Such a ground plan was a true architectural novelty when Karlovac was being built and there are only two other towns in Europe with similar plans. Geometrically lined streets and city blocks represent a Renaissance aspiration towards an ideal town.
Nowadays there is no water in the former ditches and a big part of the defensive walls is no longer visible. But the star-shaped ground plan is clearly visible from air or can be distinguished from the shape of the still present ditches.
Karlovac later developed into a Baroque town with many examples of baroque architecture that can be seen in Radićeva, Gajeva, Haulikova and other streets of Zvijezda. You can visit the Holy Trinity church with its Franciscan monastery and the Orthodox St. Nicholas Church. Both of them are on the main square (Trg Bana Jelačića) in the middle of which you can also find an interestingly shaped well. Nearby, on the Strossmayer Square you will find the City Museum and the foundation remains of St. Joseph's chapel from the 17th century.
Although some of the streets and buildings definitely yearn for restoration, the Star (Zvijezda) is really worth the visit. It is best to explore it on foot (most of it is not even accessible by car). After you have seen a bit of its architecture, take a stroll around its edges. You will definitely enjoy the shade of the majestic chestnut trees along the Promenade of Dr. Franjo Tuđman. If you have more time, you can even make the whole circle (or star! ) around and discover the remains of the defensive walls. Just follow the paths and information boards alongside the ditches.

Whenever I visit Karlovac, if the weather is nice, I like to take a stroll along Korana river banks which leads me to the Wooden bridge. It offers interesting photo oportunities, especially when the water surface mirrors the wooden structure of the bridge.
No motor vehicle traffic is allowed across the bridge so you can enjoy peace and quiet not too far from the centre. However, expect to meet joggers and cyclists. And if you are interested in jogging you can also turn left just before you reach the bridge and follow the path further away from the town centre, along Korana embankment.
The bridge was built in the 1930s.
