Gongga Mountain, Minyak Gongkar/Gangkar. There are several names to describe this holy Tibetan mountain (7556 m), long thought to be the highest in the world. Gongga mountain is a little shy - often covered in clouds and rarely shows her face. But when she does, she is a beautiful sight to behold. There is a pilgrimage trek around this mountain, passing through dramatic and fantastic scenery. We trekked from Kangding to Minyak Gongkar, crossing the 5100 m Bu Chu La (pass). We only saw a couple of Tibetan herders and a couple of Chinese trekkers. When we turned the final corner and saw Gongga Mountain it was like a revelation. Absolutely stunning! This was a trek I will remember and cherish for the rest of my life!

This Monastery is worth the visit for its extremely rich history. A temple was built here during Tibet's imperial period, and the rule of the first Dharma King Songtsen Gampo (3 Kings who are commonly credited for ushering Buddhism into Tibet and supporting its growth). This would have been some time around the 7th century and was the furthest out in part of a series of concentric rings of temples built facing the Chinese Tang Dynasty's Empire, from whence Songtsen Gampo's bride, Princess Wencheng hailed. These temples were part of a larger geomantic architectural scheme meant to physically pin down the place energy of the metaphorical body of the Tibetan plateau. The story goes that Princess Wencheng, who carried the immensely important statue known as the Jowo to Lhasa when she wedded Songsten Gampo, carried it via Tagong. When she stopped in Tagong (Lhagang in Tibetan) she is said to have left the Jowo's sister statue there. This statue is viewable in the monastery and hundreds of people make pilgrimages to it during the winter months. If you go on the road from Xinduqiao to Tagong in the winter, you can see people doing full body prostrating the entire way up. Pretty amazing and definitely worth a look if you're into history!
Lastly, if you look down on the monastery from any hilltop over the city you can see a lot of interesting stupas housing relics in the back courtyard which you cannot enter or see from ground level.

Had a short stop at Zhe Duo Mountain Pass (elevation: 4298m). The grounds were full of blooming wildflowers and the views were lovely when I visited in the last week of June. Visited in the morning and it was really cold, strong wind so do grab windbreaker.

If you want the real stuff, you're better off trying your luck in one of the small temples around Daocheng. This temple is a marvel by clear sky for its wonderful view on mount Gonga. But the clouds usually block the view. Prefer autumn season for a chance to glimpse the beast.

The mountain of the famous love song of Kanding. There is a Cable Car which leads to the top of the mountain.
Caught the cable car up Paoma Mountain. The cable car was slow but I enjoyed it as there were good views of Kangding. Once up the top you can walk around the various temples, the best looking one being this golden coloured temple higher up the hill. Walking up the steps did make me puff a bit from the altitude. There are plenty of Tibetan prayer flags around and there is even an ampitheatre.

Anjue Temple was a pleasant surprise in the city of Kangding. We visited it early in the morning, there were no tourists, the temple was clan and nice and a lonely monk was chanting his morning mantra, oblivious to our presence and seemingly far away the 21st century outside the walls. We listened to him for 10-15 minutes, trying to absorb the sound of his voice, his bell and hand-drum, the smell of the incents and the images painted on the walls and the surrounding thangkas, then got up, stepped out and found ourselves in the middle of the noise and the crowed of the city ...

Depends on the season. If it is the fall, it can be good. If it is summer, it is just so so. Anyway, you can still feel the mighty of the nature.
