The sun rises just a bit more beautifully in Gangneung, particularly in nearby Jeongdongjin, where watching the dawn break on the South Korean horizon is an epic experience and a national New Year's pastime. The beaches and museums are splendid, and Gangneung’s unique parks are worthy of exploration. Kids will be awed by the submarine and warship at Tongil Park, while adults will go nuts for the dramatic architecture and contemporary works of Haslla Art World.

Long sandy Beaches with gentle waves rolling in. Lovely walk either on the beach or looking at the restaurants with all the fish tanks outside

Due to the arrangement of my schedule, I did not take the direct night train from Seoul to Jeongdongjin station. Instead, I spent half a morning traveling from Seoul to Jeongdongjin. It was a hectic morning, making sure I don't miss the first trains to the bus station but it was worth while.
I went in October and the weather was just nice, not too chilly or too hot. I managed to walk along the beach, enjoying the breeze, without feeling sweaty. Perfect pictures could be taken almost at every corner of Jeongdongjin.
I understand a lot of local Koreans or even tourists will catch the night train and arrive at the Jeongdongjin station to catch the sunrise. Jeongdongjin is a popular place for viewing sunrise since it's is facing the East Sea.
The night train will leave Seoul at about 1030pm and will arrive at Jeongdongjin at around 4.30am or so. There are a few cafes which open at about 5am for people to keep warm before the sun rises around 615am to 630am.
Other than the famous Jeongdongjin train station, there are also time museum and rail bike around the area. I enjoyed the place a lot, it is a slower paced attraction, great for pictures and for relaxing.

I enjoyed this museum immensely. And to think that it is in South Korea. It had so many inventions that I remember my grandparents and parents having in their homes as I was growing up. Edison was truly a genius. When you see all of his inventions in one place it is overwhelming. This is worth your time.

We drove along the East Coast of South Korea and stopped at several Beaches. They were all wonderful especially Mangsang Beach north of Samcheok. It was November so it the Beaches were peaceful and incredibly beautiful. A few youngsters were flying kites. I guess during the summer these are packed but the late Fall and Winter brings a solitude and happiness you don't find in the noisy big cities.
If you want to get away with someone special and enjoy this type of quiet beauty, the East Coast that time of year is perfect. The few restaurants that were open served all types of seafood and everyone was very friendly. No one spoke any English but everyone was very friendly.

I'm clearly not a tofu fan but since it's Gangneug specialty we wanted to try it. We asked the taxi driver to bring us to a famous sundubu place and he brougth us there (check the picture). When you enter, you notice a lot of korean celebrities pictures and broadcasting channels signs, I guess it was a famous place. Apparently they use sea water which makes it really tasty.
The sundubu tasted amazing (Jambong Sundubu and Cho Sundubu) and the side dishes were amazing. One of the greatest surprise we had in Gangneung. The village is close to the beach so I would recommend to catch a taxi and to ask him to bring you to "sundubu maheul" or ask for "sundubu matchib".

Amok Beach is a great place to go grab a coffee and go for a walk at least in the winter time. The hardest choice to make is which coffee shop to go to. The beach is in front of Coffee Street in Gangneung and there is not shortage of coffee shops on this beach. Grab a coffee and sit back and enjoy the waves and fisherman plying their trade.
