Derawan Archipelago

Reviewed By Adrianus D - Sengata, Indonesia

When I planned Derawan family trip, I was imagining a remote island, far from any human civilization, with a quite surroundings, greenish blue seawater, clean and pristine coral reef. Well, it was not 100 percent accurate. Derawan island has transformed itself from a quite island to become a crowded place with steadily growing population and commercialization. People were nice and friendly, ready to provide what you need. You need a rental boat, snorkles, dive gears, a tour guide, they will provide. You want to walk around or ride a bike around, they will provide. But if you need to swim in a clear sea water, snorkle around pristine reef, or just sunbathing on a white sandy beach, Derawan will not provide satisfactorily. But don't be discourage. In a one hour boat range, you could find Maratua Island, Kakaban Island and Sangalaki Island, that will satisfy your need of living in a paradise of clear blue green sea water with pristine coral reefs. Paradise, as they have lost it in Derawan Island, still can be found in these Islands.

Bangkirai Hill Nature Tourism

Reviewed By IbuGaye - Indonesia

The whole experience here is to be recommended. Helpful people and information in the office, well prepared access walk through dense forest, exciting though short walk across 3 spans suspended from huge Bangkirai tree trunks to a lookout across a forested valley. We are not very fit, but accomplished this easily. There are other forest paths we could have taken, and did see reasonable cottages to overnight in, but after a snack at the little cafe, we headed off to Samboja.

My kids & I visited Sangalaki Island to see the baby turtles just before they were released into the ocean. It was lovely to hear about the turtle conservation efforts that are being made locally, and to learn a bit more about green and hawkbill turtles in general.

Kakaban Island

Reviewed By distyDistydisty - Jakarta, Indonesia

My first experience swimming with stingless Jellyfish. Actually jellyfish is in the lake in Kakaban Island. There are only 2 places where stingless jellyfish available, Kakaban Island and Palau in Philiphines. What makes Kabanan special is there are 4 kinds of jellyfish however Palau has only 2 kinds. Dont use fin to swim with jelllyfish coz it can harm them. Restrooms are available. After swimming with jellyfish make sure you do snorkeling close to the Kakaban Pier. The coral were amazing, fishes are so beautiful. Best spot to snorkel during hoping island..

I had a nice time during my tour in the Mahakam river. Visited nice places, such as Tanjung Isuy where I saw a long house. I also enjoyed to see the floating villages. Muara Muntai is an interesting small place. But, overall, not sure whether it was worth the long journey.

Labuan Cermin Lake

Reviewed By Adrianus D - Sengata, Indonesia

The Labuan Cermin Lake is situated at Mangkalihat Peninsula, on East Kalimantan coastal line, near Biduk-biduk village, in Berau Regency. It can be reach from Tanjung Redeb approximately 6 hours by MPV car. Another route from Bontang takes 10 hours to get here.
To enter Labuan Cermin Lake you have to go to ticket box at the pier. The ticketing staff would then arrange a motor boat transport for 5-8 people, cost you IDR 100.000,- two ways. Spend 1-2 hours minimum during the visit. Prepare yourself with bathing suit and towel; comfortable footwear; camera with water splash protection; drinks and cookies as you like. Live vest will be provided by the boat master.
Enjoy the beautiful scenery and quiet surroundings of Labuan Cermin. I think it was the unique geologic setting that makes this place special. From the hinter land, there was a carst topography with caves and underground rivers. Several rivers flows to the sea, the fresh water meets salt water to create a unique turqoise-green color of very clear water surrounded by kart hills.
Spend som time to swim and enjoy the clarity of the water... Use snorkle and googles to get better vision of the lake bottom. If you are lucky, you may find fish schools swimming near the lake bottom. Take your time, find beautiful spots, and explore.
Tips for taking photo: stand up on the boat and ask somebody to take the picture, with turqoise water on the foreground and forrested caves on the background. Make sure the boat image reflected by the lake water captured in the photo. Best time to visit is between 10 am to 2 pm.

This mall is, just like its name, BIG. Plenty of food and shopping choice. Hypermart, SOGO, Matahari, Amazon game center, Solaria, KFC and many more. But it seems unfinished with some of empty store. The potential to become the center of East Kalimantan shopping center is big. Just like its name.
