If you have some time between trains, you should take a stroll to the Friendship bridge (around 15min walking). Quite an interesting site: the Americans bombarded the bridge, and while the Chinese chose to rebuild it, the North Koreans decided to leave it destroyed on their side, to show how harmful the Americans were.

Walking along the well made path along the river is pleasant. The paths and Gardens are pleasant. Construction and remaking of paths is continuous. Statues and sculptures are worth a look along the way especially the series of sport statues from the local area. Mid to late afternoon small groups are playing musical instruments, singing or having fun. I was offered the opportunity to play an old Chinese instrument, which the locals were very amused about. There are small pockets of Gardens to peep into, a small lookout pavilion, and small plazas.
Opposite, across the road in several places there are small plazas where sports are taking place including dancing, top spinning (a real art) and other juggling. Little Cafes surround this side of the road for a meal. Fish is big on the menu.

The view of the North Korean border across the Yalu River was dreary. At night there are river cruises and one can see the stark difference between the two border cities: Dandong with all its flashy lights and Sinuiju blanketed in darkness. On the next day, my sister and I crossed the border via train from Dandong towards Sinuiju and the contrast between the two countries is so vast. The border crossing was very exciting and personally I felt scared when the North Korean guards and customs officials boarded the train and opened and checked our luggage. They checked and listed our phone brands. They spent a good hour or two inside the train. Truthfully, the written word cannot fully describe the experience.

The Friendship Bridge, right beside the Broken Bridge, not far from the Great Wall of China, illustrates the best approach to international relations. The Broken Bridge was bombed. The Great Wall was built to keep enemies out. The Friendship Bridge encourages trade and some tourism. Chinese people can cross into North Korea but foreigners in China need special visas.

Yanwo wooden structure of the Yalu River Pontoon Railway Pontoon Site is an important passageway where volunteers crossed the river and to transport combat materials during the Korean War. Across the river are the White Horse Mountains and agricultural lands of Korea. Today, all we can see are the remnants of the former wooden bridge, which has been replaced by a steel bridge.

Jinjiangshan Park in Dandong will always have a special place in my heart because it is opposite the first English school that I worked for in China. Before or after school I used to admire the lovely gate or took a stroll up the hill in the park with a lovely view over Dandong. At present there are also nice restaurants nearby and also Korean souvenir shops. You can sit on a bench and watch traditional Chinese line dancing or just enjoy watching people doing their different activities in the park. It has a small zoo, fish ponds and entertainment park for kids and it is the ideal venue for a family outing or for lovers. Climb to the top of the hill on a summer's day and enjoy the beautiful sunset, indeed a peaceful atmosphere and one of my favourite places in Dandong!

Take a taxi (30-40 RMB) or a small bus (7RMB) from Dandong Railway Station to the excellent Wullong Mountain resort about 30km outside Dandong. You can walk from the entrance gate on a lovely small tar road winding up the mountain to the amazing Buddha Temple high up in the mountain. The road takes you through various scenic spots, water streams and trees. For the not so fit, you can organize a car or a bus to take you up the mountain (about a 2 km walk and quite steep). From the temple you have a wonderful view over the countryside of Dandong. You can also take different hiking paths up the mountain from the temple and enjoy a picnic at the peak. The temple has a quiet, mysteric and peaceful atmosphere, soak in the fresh mountain air and refresh your spirit. There are souvenir shops, snack shops and restaurants around. The resort has a hotel or individual small apartments where you can stay overnight. On the other side of the mountain is a luxury golf and ski resort. Really a trip worth the money!

The Park overlooks North Korea, and with binoculars you can see the country in a fairly good amount of detail. Be aware of the people trying to sell you merchandise aggressively! Especially the boat tour sellers, who are very persistent
