As the 3 commenters below have written the trail has officially been closed but can still be climbed:
At the bottom - follow the right hand fork in the road uphill towards the water works. Before reaching the water tanks are some wooden steps on the right with red and white tape at the top. Don't go up these steps but instead bear left down a track which leads to a few scruffy buildings. As you get to the buildings you will see a large red sign written in Malaysian with a small laminated sheet saying 'No entry forest reserve'. Go right past this sign and follow the path along the fence of the water works. There are 2 tracks into the wood the far side of the stream with more big red notices and barbed wire. At the second of these the barbed wire has been ripped down and moved out the way so you can do the trail. Crossing the stream is a little challenging but can be done without getting your feet wet by crossing using the pipe and damaged fence.
Once past the barbed wire the track is excellent and easy to follow.
At the top, after skirting round the towers there is a black gate that you have to climb to get out. This is not challenging at all.
As described below it is worth arranging transport to meet you at the top to save the long walk down, there are no taxis there.

A hidden gem on the way back from the BOH Tea Plantation
The temple is spotlessly clean and the golden statues very impressive
We were fortunate enough to visit in glorious Sunshine which added to the experience
There were no other visitors whilst we were there and the place exuded peace and tranquility
There is no charge for visiting, but there are various collection boxes for donations, which we were happy to make
An excellent end to our half day Countryside Tour

Need permit and guide to climb the mountain.
Track wasn’t that difficult. Easy to intermediate level, but the weather can change it all. Was raining the whole day when I was there. The temperature was nearly unbearable. Everything was wet and muddy. Be careful with your steps.
But boy the view was definitely worth the time.
It’s like you are in a whole different place.
Definitely a must try if you are in cameron highland. Better this than that stupid strawberry farm that don’t even taste good.

There are many other strawberry farms on Camerons but this was perhaps the most commercialized with a large choice of strawberry-based food & drinks and a big dining area that is still being enlarged, together with a sizeable shop and numerous play-machines for the kids.
Had a light lunch there. Enjoyed the strawberry drink which wasn't too sweet. Thought that my friend's yoghurt with strawberries and honey tasted a bit odd though.
Got some nice photos of the strawberries being grown in pots there as well as the lovely lettuce (hydroponics) and other plants/flowers there.

it's a must go places if you're at cameron highlands...the cameron highlands night market is relocated to the golden hills area...still crowded as usual...the entrance is jam and it's hard to get parking...there's variety of things you can find here...foods, souvenirs, shirts, fruits, vegetables etc...recommended...

Entrance fee was MYR 6 during our visit last week. A wide variety of flowers, especially the roses. One of the staff introduced us to the green rose, telling us that the rose was special as it was different. Roses of different colours, and there was flower fragrance in the air as we walked past them. Not a fan of flowers but it was still a nice visit. I had no idea flowers and roses could be this interesting to see. We spent around an hour but didn't manage to explore the whole place.

We were dropped at the temple in Brinchang and told that there was a trail to take us back to Tanah Rata behind the temple. Which there was... but what were not told was that it was the trail of death and should never be attempted by anyone ever (at least they were my girlfriends thoughts)!
It is tough. I am an experienced hiker and I found it tough in the heat and humidity. I really enjoyed scrambling down the steep hills and physically climbing up the other side. Unfortunately my partner is not an experienced hiker and was not prepared for a hike like this. She made it, but it was a struggle for her. Luckily it is relatively short, and it was a dry day. If it had been longer or if it had rained, we would have really struggled.
It was a really beautiful trail through lovely Jungle and was relatively straightforward to find and follow, although pretty overgrown in places. The direction we walked it meant that we joined trail 3 and then trail 5 in order to get back to Tanah Rata. Both of these trails were like walking down a pavement compared to number 2!!
I highly recommend that you give this a go if you are in the area, but know what you are getting into before going. Take plenty of water and wear decent walking shoes! And avoid if it is likely to rain! Oh and do it the direction we did it in if you're staying in Tanah Rata. You will not want to visit a temple or get a taxi afterwards, but an ice cream and your hotel will be high on your list!!

We visited the "Time Tunnel" next door (excellent, see separate review). The pick your own strawberry prices at Kok Lim Strawberry Farm seemed expensive, so we just wandered around the shop. Some good items on sale, and it was great to find a variety of small jams for gifts, which I purchased.
